8/24/2007 – Le Moyne College

WILMINGTON MEN EDGED BY LE MOYNE, 3-2

SYRACUSE, NY -- The Wilmington College Wildcats dropped a 3-2 decision to the host Dolphins of Le Moyne College in the opening game of the Le Moyne College Classic on Friday afternoon at the Niland Athletic Complex.

The Dolphins scored twice in the opening frame as Steve Blackwell scored an unassisted goal in the 13th minute. Le Moyne added another unassisted tally in the 24th minute when Brandon Morse found the back of the net.

Wilmington finally got on the board early in the second half as senior midfielder Oren Segev scored just over four minutes into the period. Le Moyne wasted no time in getting the goal back as Mark Lukowiecki headed home a pass from Eric Macias just one minute later.

The Wildcats put the pressure on late in the game, and cut the deficit to one as junior forward Mohamed Kabbia connected off a feed from sophomore forward Sargbah Tarpeh to put the score at 3-2. That would be as close as Wilmington would get, as the Dolphins held on for the one goal victory.

Wildcat senior goalkeeper Dan Mangat recorded four saves in net, as he was peppered with 19 shots. Steve White notched three saves for Le Moyne. The Dolphins held the 19-10 advantage in shots, but Wilmington had the 7-6 edge in corner kicks.

With the loss, the Wildcats fall to 0-1 on the young season while Le Moyne improves to 1-0 on the year. Wilmington returns to the pitch on Saturday afternoon when the take on the Golden Knights of the College of Saint Rose in their final game of the Le Moyne College Classic at noon.

WILDCATS KNOCK OFF COLLEGE OF SAINT ROSE, 2-1

SYRACUSE, NY -- The Wildcats of Wilmington College picked up their first win of the season with a 2-1 victory over the Golden Knights of the College of Saint Rose on Saturday afternoon at the LeMoyne College Classic. The game was suspended in the 81st minute due to a lightning storm.

Junior midfielder Probyn Allen put the Wildcats on the board first in the 39th minute when he converted a feed from freshman forward Frank Piccioni. Saint Rose tied the game at one when Todd Driscoll found the back of the net for the Golden Knights.

The game winner came off the foot of Wildcats’ junior Agustin Aguilera, as he beat Saint Rose keeper Patrick Whalen on a penalty kick in the 75th minute.

Senior goalkeeper Dan Mangat recorded one save for the Wildcats as he faced just nine shots. Whalen notched five saves for the Golden Knights. Wilmington held an astounding 21-9 advantage in shots, but Saint Rose held the 5-0 mark in corner kicks.

With the win, Wilmington improves to 1-1 on the season while Saint Rose drops to 0-2 on the year. The Wildcats return to the pitch on Saturday afternoon when they travel to the Holy Family University Classic and tangle with the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College at noon.

WILMINGTON DEFEATS STAC, 3-2

PHILADELPHIA, PA -- The Wildcats of Wilmington College got a little help with an “own goal” from the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College Spartans in the 88th minute, to come away with the 3-2 victory men’s soccer action at the Holy Family University Classic on Saturday afternoon.

St. Thomas struck first in the contest when senior defender John Lumsden scored on a free kick from 45 yards out in the 10th minute.

Wilmington would score twice before the half was out though. The first was set up when senior midfielder Oren Segev fed sophomore forward Sargbah Tarpeh for a breakaway. Tarpeh buried the ball into the lower left corner of the goal.

The second goal was the result of some quick passing by the Wildcats. Junior midfielder Probyn Allen fed a pass towards the right corner for freshman forwardFrank Piccioni, who quickly crossed to streaking junior Agustin Aguilera. Aguilera tapped in just past the diving Spartan keeper, to give the ‘Cats the 2-1 lead.

The game was very physical with 44 fouls and 4 yellow cards combined for both teams. The rough play led to the fourth goal, as the Spartans were awarded a penalty kick in the 62nd minute. Sophomore Jon Michael Nabais converted into the lower left portion of the net and tied the game at two goals apiece.

The game would stay tied until the 88th minute, when freshman midfielder Joe Stant sent a cross into the box for Wilmington. In attempting to clear the ball, a St. Thomas defender inadvertently scored upon his own keeper.

Senior goal keeper Dan Mangat made two saves for the Wildcats and improved his record to 2-1 on the season, while sophomore Michael Chappas made 3 saves in a losing effort for the Spartans.

With the win, the Wildcats improve to 2-1 on the season, while St. Thomas dropped to 1-3 for the year. Wilmington returns to action on Sunday afternoon when they take on Assumption College on day two of the Holy Family Classic.

9/2/2007 – Holy Family University ClassicAssumption College

WILMINGTON UPENDS ASSUMPTION, 1-0

PHILADELPHIA, PA -- Sophomore midfielder Fatoma Turay scored the game’s lone goal in the 63rd minute to send the Wildcats of Wilmington College away with a 1-0 victory over the Greyhounds of Assumption College in men’s soccer action on Sunday afternoon. Wilmington finished 2-0 at the Holy Family University Classic.

The two teams battled to a scoreless first half, and it wasn’t until Turay netted the game winning goal during the 63rd minute, as he connected off a feed from junior forward Mohamed Kabbia. The Wildcat defense shut down the Greyhounds for the remainder of the game, and held on for the one-goal victory.

Senior goalkeeper Dan Mangat recorded three saves in net for the Wildcats, as he picked up his first shutout win of the season. Brandan Sullivan notched eight saves in goal for the Greyhounds. Wilmington held an 11-7 advantage in shots, and also had a 4-3 lead in corner kicks.

With the win, Wilmington improves to 3-1 on the season while Assumption dropped to 1-3-1 on the year. The Wildcats return to action on Saturday afternoon when the host the Chargers of Dominican College in a pivotal CACC match beginning at 1:00 PM at the Kirkwood Complex.

9/8/2007 – DOMINICAN COLLEGE

WILMINGTON MEN BLANKED BY CHARGERS, 2-0

NEW CASTLE, DE -- The Wildcats of Wilmington College were shut out by the visiting Chargers of Dominican College, 2-0 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men’s soccer action on Saturday afternoon at the Kirkwood Complex. Wilmington entered the contest ranked ninth in the New England Region and the Chargers are currently ranked third.

Dominican jumped on the board in the 16th minute when Joseph Ruesgen deflected a shot off the foot of Joe Wright on a direct kick, past Wilmington keeper Dan Mangat. The two teams would battle it out for the remainder of the half, with Wilmington’s best chance coming on a header by sophomore forward Sargbah Tarpeh. Tarpeh leaped over the Charger defender and headed the ball hard, but Dominican goalie Robert Kelly made a diving stop with his right hand and punched the ball away to preserve the one goal lead.

The Chargers added an insurance goal in the 72nd minute to put the game away, as Joe Wright headed a beautiful corner kick from Ryan Clancy. Dominican’s defense kept the Wildcats at bay for the remainder of the game, and held on for the important conference victory.

Dominican out-shot the Wildcats by a 17-8 margin, and held a 9-6 advantage in corner kicks. The two teams combined for 29 fouls, with Wilmington amassing 23 of the whistles, while both squads totaled 11 yellow cards in the match. Wilmington keeper, senior Dan Mangat recorded twelve saves in goal, while Robert Kelly notched three saves between the pipes for Dominican.

Following the game, the Wildcats dropped to 0-1 in the CACC and 3-2 on the season, while Dominican improved to 1-0 in the conference and 3-0-3 on the year. Wilmington is scheduled to return to action on Wednesday afternoon when they play host to the Bears of the New York Institute of Technology in a 3:30 PM contest at the Kirkwood Complex.

9/12/2007 – NEW YORK INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

WILMINGTON UPENDED BY NYIT, 1-0

NEW CASTLE, DE -- The Wildcats of Wilmington College lost a heartbreaker to the visiting Bear of the New York Institute of Technology, 1-0 in men’ soccer action on Wednesday afternoon at the Kirkwood Complex. Wilmington entered the game ranked 10th in the New England Region’s latest poll, while NYIT was ranked 5th in the Northeast Region.

The game remained scoreless until Roi Castro put the Bears on the board with an unassisted goal with just under nine minutes remaining in the game. NYIT was able to hold on for the duration, and came away with the shutout victory. Senior goalkeeper Dan Mangat was stellar in net for the Wildcats, as he turned away 11 shots. NYIT keeper Cosimo D’Agostino recorded two saves in goal for the Bears.

NYIT out-shot the Wildcats by a 15-7margin and held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks. The two teams combined for six yellow cards and 40 fouls.

Following the game, Wilmington dropped to 3-3 on the season while NYIT improved to 3-1 on the year. The Wildcats return to the pitch on Saturday afternoon when they host the Mavericks of Mercy College in a 2:00 PM contest.

9/15/2007 – MERCY COLLEGE

WILMINGTON BLANKS MERCY, 2-0 IN MEN'S SOCCER

NEW CASTLE, DE -- Sophomore forward Sargbah Tarpeh tallied two goals to help lead the Wildcats of Wilmington University over the visiting Mavericks of Mercy College in men’s soccer action on Saturday afternoon at the Kirkwood Compelx.

Wilmington wasted little time in getting on the board, as Tarpeh netted his first goal of the day just over four minutes into the game. Sophomore midfielder Fatoma Turay played a beautiful through ball that dissected the Maverick defense, right onto the hard-charging Tarpeh. Tarpeh one touched the ball around Mercy goalkeeper Carl Spence and knocked it home, for what proved to be the game-winning goal for the Wildcats.

The Wildcat defense played strong all afternoon, keeping the Mavericks from generating much offense. Leading the way was freshman Billy Curren, and sophomores Selekie Kamara and Dave Dease, along with juniors Mark Pagano and Agustin Aguilera, provided a formidable supporting cast.

Wilmington added an insurance goal during the 85th minute, when junior midfielder Probyn Allen sent a cross toward goal that Tarpeh was able to control, and the dynamic forward beat the Maverick keeper once again.

Senior goalkeeper Dan Mangat recorded five saves in net for Wilmington, as he picked up his second shutout on the season. Carl Spence notched five saves in net for Mercy. The Wildcats out-shot the Mavericks by a 15-5 margin, and also held a 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.

With the win, Wilmington improves to 4-3 on the season while Mercy drops to 1-1-2 on the year. The Wildcats return to action on Tuesday afternoon, when they play host to the cross-town rival Lightning of Goldey-Beacom College in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match beginning at 3:30 PM.

9/18/2007 – GOLDEY-BEACOM COLLEGE

WILMINGTON SHUTS OUT GOLDEY-BEACOM, 4-0

NEW CASTLE, DE -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University shut out the visiting Lightning of Goldey-Beacom College in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men’s soccer action Tuesday afternoon at the Kirkwood Complex.

Sophomore forward Sargbah Tarpeh put the ‘Cats up 1-0 during the 20th minute when he took a feed from senior midfielder Oren Segev and beat the Lightning keeper one-on-one. Junior Al-Hassane Fomba gave the Wildcats a little insurance when he knocked home a cross from freshman Joe Stant during the 38th minute. Stant closed out the scoring in the first half, when junior Probyn Allen sent a cross to the freshman, who one-touched the ball and then fired a left-footed volley into the upper corner of the net.

Wilmington would add one more goal in the second half, as freshman forward Frank Piccioni tallied a goal of an assist from Fomba to give the ‘Cats the four goal lead.

Goldey-Beacom out-shot the Wildcats by a 13-12 margin, and held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks. Senior goal keeper Dan Mangat recorded five saves for Wilmington before giving way to freshman Chris Ashiotes, who notched one save and combined with Mangat on the ‘Cats third shut-out of the season. Garret Shuler recorded fives saves in goal for the Lightning.

With the win, Wilmington improves to 1-1 in the CACC and 5-3 overall, while Goldey-Beacom dropped to 0-1-1 in the conference and 0-8-1 on the season. The Wildcats return to the pitch on Saturday afternoon when they travel to take on the Warriors of Nyack College in a CACC match beginning at 3:00 PM.

9/22/2007 – Nyack College

WILDCATS DOWN NYACK, 5-1

NYACK, NY -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University downed the host Warriors of Nyack College in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men’s soccer action on Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore forward Sargbah Tarpeh put the Wildcats on the board early, when he knocked home an unassisted goal just over five minutes into the game. Nyack tied the game just over seven minutes later as Greg Allen headed home a goal.

Wilmington opened the second period with some offensive pressure and found the back of the net just three minutes in when junior Agustin Aguilera connected on a free kick from the center of the 18 to put the Wildcats ahead 2-1. The Wildcats would add three more unanswered goals over the next thirty minutes to put the game out of reach. Tarpeh added his second tally when he knocked home a rebound off a shot from Aguilera. Sophomore Fatoma Turay picked up an unassisted goal, and junior Jose Coronado closed out the scoring when he finished a cross from Mohamed Camara.

Wilmington out-shot Nyack by a 20-8 margin and held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks. Senior Dan Mangat recorded two saves in goal for the Wildcats, while Peter Murphy notched eight saves between the pipes for the Warriors.

With the win, Wilmington improves to 2-1 in the CACC and 6-3 overall, while Nyack drops to 0-2 in the conference and 3-5-1 on the season. The Wildcats return to the pitch on Tuesday afternoon when they play host to the Griffins of Chestnut Hill College in a CACC match beginning at 4:30 PM.

WILMINGTON DEFEATS CHESTNUT HILL, 4-1

NEW CASTLE, DE -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University defeated the visiting Griffins of Chestnut Hill College 4-1 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men’s soccer action on Tuesday afternoon at the Kirkwood Complex.

Wilmington jumped on the board just over twelve minutes in when junior midfielder Agustin Aguilera converted a penalty kick. Senior midfielder Oren Segev connected on a header off a cross from sophomore defender Selekie Kamara in the 22nd minute to put the ‘Cats up by a score of 2-0. Sophomore forward closed out the scoring in the first half as he took a feed from junior midfielder Probyn Allen and buried it past the Griffin goalkeeper.

Tarpeh netted his second goal of the game, the final tally for the Wildcats on the afternoon, as he scored an unassisted goal during the 66th minute. Chestnut Hill staved off the shutout when John Wood scored off an assist from Philippe Lucas, and beat the Wildcats back-up goalkeeper Chris Ashiotes.

Senior keeper, Dan Mangat recorded two saves in goal for the Wildcats, before giving way to Ashiotes in the 74th minute. Duhan Malali notched six saves for Chestnut Hill. Wilmington out shot the Griffins by a 20-6 margin, but the visitors held a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.

With the win, Wilmington improved to 3-1 in the CACC and 7-3 overall, while Chestnut Hill dropped to 0-3 in the conference and 4-3-1 on the season. WILDCATS HOLD OFF GOLDEN FALCONS, 4-2

NEW CASTLE, DE -- The strong play of junior Agustin Aguilera helped the Wildcats of Wilmington University hold off the visiting Golden Falcons of Felician College, 4-2 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men’s soccer action on Saturday afternoon at the Kirkwood Complex.

Aguilera broke a scoreless tie during the 38th minute when he connected two beautiful passes from junior Probyn Allen and freshman Frank Piccioni to put the ‘Cats up by a score of 1-0. The two teams entered the half by the same 1-0 score, but the Wildcat offense would not be held down for long.

Felician tied the game at the start of the second half as Godlove Takyi capitalized on a miscue by a Wilmington defender just over two minutes in. Just seven minutes later, Wilmington started a string of three unanswered goals to give the hosts a little insurance. Aguilera converted a penalty kick during the 52nd minute, and sophomore Fatoma Turay buried a deflection off a shot from freshman midfielder Wilson Barlee ten minutes later. Sophomore forward Sargbah Tarpeh received a nice through ball from freshman Anthony Randazzo, and beat the Felician keeper one-on-one at the 66 minute mark to give the Wildcats a 4-1 lead. The Golden Falcons added a gold during the 83rd minute when Boris Shabovta connected on a chip shot over Wilmington keeper Dan Mangat, but it was too little too late for the visitors, as the Wildcats settled down to close out the game.

Mangat recorded five saves in goal for Wilmington, while Paulo DosSantos notched eight saves in net for Felician. The Wildcats out-shot the Golden Falcons by a 22-12 margin, and held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.

With the win, the Wildcats improve to 4-1 in the CACC and 8-3 overall, while Felician drops to 0-4-1 in the conference and 0-10-2 on the season. Wilmington returns to action on Wednesday afternoon when they travel to take on the Tigers of Holy Family University in a CACC match beginning at 4:00 PM.

WILMINGTON NIPS HOLY FAMILY, 1-0 IN OT

PHILADELPHIA, PA -- Junior midfielder Agustin Aguilera scored the game’s lone goal five minutes into the first overtime period, to send the Wildcats of Wilmington University away with the thrilling 1-0 overtime victory over the Tigers of Holy Family University in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men’s soccer action on Wednesday afternoon.

The Wildcats took advantage of a beautiful set piece to net the game winner. Senior midfielder Oren Segev sent a corner kick into the box, where it was deflected off the head of sophomore Dave Dease. Aguilera took the deflection and drove it past the Holy Family goal keeper, and gave Wilmington, who entered the game ranked eight in the New England region, a huge win.

Senior goal keeper Dan Mangat was stellar in net for Wilmington, as he recorded four crucial saves. Benjamin Roller notched six saves for Holy Family. The Wildcats out-shot the Tigers by a 15-10 margin and held a 7-6 advantage in corner kicks.

With the win, Wilmington improves to 5-1 in the CACC and 9-3 overall, while Holy Family drops to 3-1 in the conference and 7-5-1 on the season. The Wildcats return to action on Saturday evening when they play host to the Cougars of Caldwell College in a CACC match beginning at 7:00 PM, played at Caravel Academy.

WILMINGTON RALLIES TO TIE CALDWELL

BEAR, DE -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University battled back from a goal down at the half, to tie the Cougars of Caldwell College, 1-1 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men’s soccer action on Saturday evening at Caravel Academy.

Caldwell struck first when Chad Bennett flicked a header on a ball from Peter Carlsson over the outstretched hands of Wilmington keeper Dan Mangat during the 21st minute. The Wildcats tied the game at the 60 minute mark, when freshman Anthony Randazzo finished a cross from sophomore Fatoma Turay. Turay played a ball from sophomore Sargbah Tarpeh and sent it to the far post, where Randazzo served up a one-touch volley with his left foot to blast it past the Caldwell keeper for his first collegiate goal.

The game was tied at the end of regulation and ended up with the same score after two overtime periods. Caldwell had the best opportunity to score during the closing seconds of the first overtime session, but a point blank save from Mangat kept the Wildcats alive.

Senior goalkeeper Dan Mangat recorded six saves for Wilmington while John Plaugic notched one save for Caldwell. The Cougar defense did a good job at keeping the Wildcat offense at bay, as the home team could only muster up four shots. Caldwell recorded 13 shots on the evening, and held a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks. The contest was very physical, and resulted in 37 combined fouls, nine yellow cards, and two red cards.

Following the game, Wilmington stood at 5-1-1 in the CACC and 9-3-1 overall, while Caldwell is 4-1-1 in the conference and 6-3-3 on the season. The Wildcats return to the pitch on Monday evening when they travel to take on the Profs of Rowan University in a non-conference match beginning at 7:00 PM.

10/8/2007 – Rowan University

ROWAN BEATS WILMINGTON, 3-1

GLASSBORO, NJ -- The Rowan University men’s soccer team defeated Wilmington University, 3-1 in a non-conference game on Monday night.

With the win, the Profs improve to 7-5-1, while the Wildcats have a 9-4-1 record. Rowan jumped out to a 1-0 lead 51 seconds into the contest. Forward Dwayne Reevey headed in a pass from midfielder Peter Malkmus. Wilmington tied the game (1-1) at 31:17 when midfielder Wilson Barlee put back a rebounded shot. Rowan forward Tom Gannon had a direct kick that found the back of net at 64:29 putting the Profs ahead, 2-1. Midfielder Dan Arnold added an insurance goal at 79:56.

Wilmington took 14 shots and Rowan had 12. Goalkeepers Kevin Nuss and Dave Schindewolf made three and two saves respectively for the Profs. Goalie Dan Mangat turned away seven shots in the Wildcats’ net.

The Wildcats return to action on Saturday afternoon when they play host to the Deacons of Bloomfield College in a CACC match beginning at 2:00 PM.

10/13/2007 – BLOOMFIELD COLLEGE

WILDCATS EDGE BLOOMFIELD, 1-0

NEW CASTLE, DE -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University edged the visiting Deacons of Bloomfield College, 1-0 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men's soccer action on Saturday afternoon at the Kirkwood Complex.

Wilmington’s lone goal came at the 14 minute mark when the ‘Cats were able to capitalize on a set piece thanks to a Bloomfield foul. Sophomore midfielder Dave Dease fired off a cross that was knocked home by freshman forward Joe Stant. That would be all the scoring the Wildcats would record and need, as Wilmington kept the Deacon offense at bay for most of the afternoon.

Wilmington senior goalkeeper Dan Mangat recorded five saves in the shutout. Bloomfield’s Herbert Iglesias recorded one save in net, before being replaced by Julio Sanchez midway through the first half. Sanchez notched eight saves in goal for the Deacons. The Wildcats out-shot the Deacons by a 15-10 margin and held an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.

With the win, Wilmington improved to 6-1-1 in the CACC and 10-4-1 overall, while Bloomfield dropped to 0-3-2 in the conference and 1-9-2 on the season. The Wildcats return to action on Thursday afternoon when they play host to the Golden Rams of West Chester University in a non-conference match beginning at 3:00 PM.

10/18/2007 – WEST CHESTER UNIVERSITY

WILMINGTON FALLS TO WEST CHESTER, 2-1

NEW CASTLE, DE -- The Golden Rams of West Chester University scored with just over three minutes remaining, to break a 1-1 tie and held on for a 2-1 win over the host Wildcats of Wilmington University in non-conference men’s soccer action on Thursday afternoon at the Kirkwood Complex.

Wilmington jumped on the board first when senior midfielder Oren Segev tallied an unassisted goal just nine minutes into the game. West Chester tied the game with two minutes remaining in the first half, as Bryan Nugent scored off assists from Kevin Ballick and David Miller.

The score would remain tied for much of the second half, before West Chester’s Alex Inman finished off a pass from Jason Mackel to give the Golden Rams the come from behind victory.

Wilmington keeper, senior Dan Mangat recorded six saves in net, while three Golden Rams split time between the pipes for the visitors. Peter Weiss notched two saves before giving way to Todd Deiter early in the second half. Deiter recorded a save and gave way to Justin Johnson with just over fourteen minutes remaining. Johnson closed out the game for West Chester and picked up two saves in net. The Wildcats out-shot the Golden Rams by a 12-11 margin, but the visitors held an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Before the game, Wilmington honored their seniors, playing in their final home game. The group included midfielder Oren Segev, goalkeeper Dan Mangat, defender Rob Traynor, and keeper Greg Cope.

Following the game, Wilmington dropped to 10-5-1 on the season, while West Chester improved to 8-8 overall. The Wildcats return to action on Saturday afternoon, when they travel to take on the Eagles of Post University in a CACC match beginning at 3:00 PM.

WILDCATS SHUT OUT POST, 3-0

WATERBURY, CT -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University shut out the host Eagles of Post University, 3-0 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men’s soccer action on Saturday afternoon.

The first half remained scoreless until the closing seconds when freshman midfielder Wilson Barlee let loose a shot from about thirty yards out that found the back of the net just as the buzzer was sounding, to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead entering halftime.

Wilmington added two insurance goals early in the second half when sophomore midfielder Jose Coronado headed home a cross from Barlee during the 55th minute. Sophomore Dave Dease closed out the scoring for the ‘Cats when he connected off a corner kick from junior Augustin Aguilera that was deflected by freshman Joe Stant in the 65th minute.

Wildcat goalkeeper, senior Dan Mangat notched five saves in the shutout victory, while Chirs Ouellette recorded three saves in goal for the Eagles. Post out-shot the ‘Cats by a 13-11 margin and the corner kicks were tied at two apiece.

With the win, Wilmington improved to 7-1-1 in the CACC and 11-5-1 on the season, while Post dropped to 3-5 in the conference and 4-12 overall. The Wildcats return to action on Wednesday afternoon, when they go on the road to close out their regular season with a non-conference match against the Firebirds of the University of the District of Columbia at 3:00 PM.

WILMINGTON ADVANCES TO FINAL WITH 1-0 WIN OVER CALDWELL

RUTHERFORD, NJ -- Holy Family University and Wilmington (Del.) University earned victories in their Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men’s soccer semifinal matches on Wednesday afternoon, hosted by Felician College at Tryon Field. No. 4 seed Holy Family defeated Dominican (N.Y.) College, 1-0, and No. 2 seed Wilmington followed with a 1-0 overtime win over Caldwell College.

The Tigers and Wildcats will play for the CACC championship on Saturday at approximately 6:30 p.m. at Tryon.

In the day’s first match, Dominican goalkeeper Robert Kelly (Kearny, NJ) saved a penalty kick 1:57 into the contest, but HFU (14-7-1) recovered to take the lead on an unassisted goal by Steve Kientzy (Philadelphia, PA) in the 13th minute. A Dominican shot hit a goalpost in the second half, then Tiger keeper Ben Roller (Philadelphia, PA) preserved the victory by jumping to tip a high hard shot over the crossbar in the 73rd minute. Roller made four saves in the shutout. Holy Family ended the top-seeded Chargers’ (11-3-5) streak of three consecutive CACC championships.

Wilmington (12-5-1) and No. 3 seed Caldwell each attempted 13 shots in a scoreless 90 minutes of regulation. But the Wildcats converted on the first shot of overtime. Following a handball call on Caldwell, a Fatoma Turay (Philadelphia, PA) free kick sailed diagonally across the penalty area to the head of teammate Billy Curran (Chadds Ford, PA), who finished the play inside the left post 1:44 into the first extra session. Dan Mangat (Newark, DE) made three saves for Wilmington, and John Plaugic (Kearny, NJ) had four for the Cougars (10-6-4).

WILMINGTON MEN WIN CACC CHAMPIONSHIP WITH 5-3 SHOOTOUT WIN OVER HOLY FAMILY

RUTHERFORD, NJ -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University capped off an exciting 2007 season with a thrilling shootout victory over the Tigers of Holy Family University. The two teams battled to a 1-1 draw through two overtime periods, but the Wildcats prevailed in the shootout by a margin of 5-3, and gave the ‘Cats their first Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament title.

Wilmington, which entered the finals as the number two seed, shot first in the shootout round. Junior midfielder Augustin Aguilera converted his attempt, and Holy Family’s Ed Szambelak followed with the same result. Next, freshman Billy Curran netted his opportunity, and the Tiger’s Jim Latronica was stopped by a beautiful save from Wildcat keeper Dan Mangat. Freshman Anthony Randazzo buried his opportunity, and Steve Kientzy followed up with a goal of his own. In the fourth round, senior Oren Segev converted his try, as did Sean Hordijenko of Holy Family. The final round saw sophomore forward Sargbah Tarpeh find the back of the net to give the ‘Cats the thrilling 5-3 victory.

Holy Family dominated play for much of the first half, holding an 11-4 advantage in shots, but the Wildcats were able to get on the board when freshman midfielder Joe Stant connected on a long ball from sophomore defender Selekie Kamara during the 37th minute.

The Tigers tied the game at one just over three minutes into the second half when Sean Hordijenko found Steve Kientzy on a breakaway. The two squads would not score again, thanks to stellar play by both goalkeepers.

Senior Dan Mangat, the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, recorded nine saves in goal for the Wildcats. Benjamin Roller notched six saves for Holy Family. The Tigers out-shot the Wildcats by a 31-17 margin, and held a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks.

Mangat, along with freshman defender Billy Curran, freshman midfielder Joe Stant, sophomore forward Sargbah Tarpeh, and sophomore midfielder Fatoma Turay were named to the All-Tournament team for their performances.

Following the game, Wilmington ended the season with a record of 12-5-2, while Holy Family closed out the year at 14-7-2.
