Men's Soccer 2007 Season Outlook

The 2007 season begins with very high expectations for the Wilmington College Men’s Soccer Program. Head Coach Nick Papanicolas has added Miles Dean as an assistant to join his other assistant coaches Jeff Zoyac and Musa Kaba. Recruiting has brought a talented crop of new players to this years’ roster. Coach Papanicolas is coming off his best season as a head coach in 2006, as he led the ‘Cats to a record of 11-5-4 and a second place finish in the very competitive Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference. Also in 2006, many first time honors were earned by the program, including Papanicolas’ first CACC Coach of the Year award. Last season also saw the Wildcats place two players on the New England All-Region Team and had four players voted to the CACC First and Second teams.

Leading the cast of returning players are the three seniors, goalkeeper Dan Mangat, utility man Rob Traynor (Pitman HS/Pitman, NJ), and midfielder Oren Segev. Mangat (St. Mark’s HS/Newark, DE) earned First-Team All-CACC and Second Team All-New England Region honors last season, while Segev (Harishoinim/Israel) had off-season surgery on both legs and looks to return to the level of play he saw in 2005 when he was named CACC honorable mention.

The eleven remaining returnees include juniors Probyn Allen (Woodstown HS/Woodstown, NJ), Nick Rotella (Washington Twp. HS/Turnersville NJ), and Mohamed Kabbia (Bartram HS/Philadelphia, PA). The sophomore class is led by the CACC 2007 Rookie of the Year, Sargbah Tarpeh. Tarpeh, a forward, (Overbrook HS/Philadelphia, PA) was named First Team All-CACC and Second Team All-New England Region. Fellow sophomores include, midfielders Fatoma Turay (Bartram HS/Philadelphia, PA), Jose Coronado (Washington Lee/Falls Church, VA); defenders, Selekie Kamara (Bartram HS/Philadelphia, PA), Dave Dease (Delsea HS/Newfield, NJ); forwards Nana Akwasi-Nyantekyi (Prempeh, Ghana/Brooklyn, NY), Kevin Zaremba (Glassboro HS/Glassboro, NJ); and goalkeeper Bobby Vandenbraak (Brandywine HS/Wilmington, DE).

Coach Papanicolas has added many new faces to the program which includes five transfers. Leading this new ensemble is defender Agustin Augilera from the College of Southwest (Ysleta/ El Paso, TX), mid-fielder Al-Hassane Fomba (Guinea, West Africa) from Camden County College, defender Marc Pagano (Merchantville, NJ) from Gloucester County College, defender Bill Curran (Salesianum HS/Chadds Ford, PA) from West Chester University and goalkeeper Greg Cope from Cecil Community College (Newark HS/ Newark, DE).

Finally, the freshman class this season includes nine new faces and will solidify the future of the program. Leading the way is the dynamic midfielder, Wilson Barlee (Upper Darby HS/Upper Darby, PA), midfielder Anthony Randazzo (Cumberland HS/Bridgeton, NJ), defender Socrates Joachim (Caesar Rodney HS/Dover, DE) and forward Mohamed Camara (South Philadelphia HS/Philadelphia, PA). Rounding out the freshman class is goalkeeper Chris Ashiotes (Hammonton HS/Atco, NJ), defender Nick Smith (Washington Twp. HS/Sewell, NJ), midfielder Joe Stant (Caesar Rodney HS/Dover, DE), and forward Frank Piccioni (Cumberland HS/Bridgeton, NJ).
