Wilmington University Celebrates National Library Week with Series 'Inspired by Books'

March 21, 2008—New Castle, DE. In recognition of National Library Week, the Wilmington University Library is proud to hold 'Inspired by Books: How Books and Visual Art Make a Difference in the Lives of Troubled Youth' on Thursday, April 17, 2008 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Guest speaker, author Billie Travalini will discuss her experiences working with troubled youth and how literature and visual art can help with the rehabilitation process. This event is free and open to the public, and will be held at the Doberstein Admissions Center at Wilmington University's New Castle Campus.

National Library Week was first sponsored in 1958 and is a national observance to celebrate the contributions of our nation's libraries and librarians. The event is also held to promote library use across the nation and is sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA).

Billie Travalini is the author of Teaching Troubled Youth: A Pedagogical Approach. She is an author, poet, and director of the Delaware Literary Connection. Currently, she is an Adjunct Professor of English at Wilmington University. While working with youth involved in the rehabilitative and child mental health divisions of the Delaware Children's Department, Travalini encouraged the teens to read works of literature and use visual art to express how the books made them feel.

Several works of art created by these troubled youth will be on display at the event.

Along with guest speaker Billie Travalini, several guest panelists will be present to respond to the topic at large.

This program is made possible, in part, by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Delaware Division of the Arts, a state agency dedicated to nurturing and supporting the arts in Delaware to enhance the quality of life for all Delawareans.
