Type 1 (juvenile) diabetes can affect children suddenly and make then dependent on injected or pumped insulin for the rest of their lives. In order to stay alive and healthy, children with type 1 diabetes must take multiple injections daily and test their blood sugar level by pricking their fingers six or more times a day. 3 million Americans may have type 1 diabetes and each year over 15,000 children are diagnosed with diabetes in the U.S alone.
