President Dr. Varsalona Awards Scholarship at 2008 Goodwill Annual Awards Luncheon

April 25, 2008—Wilmington, DE. Goodwill Industries held the 2008 Goodwill Annual Awards Luncheon today, April 25, 2008 from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. at the Chase Center on the Riverfront in Wilmington. The awards luncheon is held every year in honor of individuals who, with the assistance of Goodwill, have improved their lives through the power of work. Wilmington University was a proud sponsor of this event.

Several individuals were honored today: Senator Tom Carper received the Advocacy Award for his commitment and support of the Goodwill mission, Alice Coleman received the Volunteer of the Year Award for her dedication to the mission of the Goodwill. Lawanda Lucas was the recipient of this year's Personal Achievement Award for her continued enthusiasm while working at the Goodwill. Gerald Kane received the Graduate of the Year Award, and Darnell Huff received the Senator William V. Roth, Jr. Award for Achievement.

Wilmington University President announced the award for Employee of the Year, which was awarded to Barbara Maddams. Maddams began her career at Goodwill in 1991 as a personal secretary, and has worked in various positions at the company before working in her current position as Employee Benefits Manager. "Barbara's genuine, heartfelt dedication over the years sets an example of excellence that truly personifies the mission of Goodwill in action." Stated Dr. Varsalona.

After Barbara Maddams received her award, she was surprised to hear there was more. "Thank you, Barbara. Please don't leave just yet," said Dr. Varsalona, "As President of Wilmington University and an ardent advocate of continuing education, it is my firm belief that ongoing learning is essential to success. It is truly my honor and privilege to award a full, four year scholarship to employee of the year, Barbara Maddams."

In shock and disbelief, Barbara Maddams accepted the scholarship award. "This is such a surprise to me, thank you very much!" said Maddams, "People are always telling me to go back to school, and now I guess I have no excuse."
