Wilmington University To Be Recognized by House of Representatives

May 5, 2008—Dover, DE. The Delaware House of Representatives, lead by House Majority Leader Representative Richard Cathcart, will commemorate and recognize Wilmington University's transition from a college to a university on May 8, 2008 in Legislative Hall in Dover, Delaware at 2:00 p.m.

The legislative presentation will be made to Dr. Jack P. Varsalona, President of Wilmington University, in tribute to the strides the school has made, particularly in becoming a University in September 2007.

Becoming a University was the result of a two-year study initiated by Dr. Varsalona to conduct research on the impact of such a change. During the discussion, it was noted that Wilmington College already met many of the criteria to be considered a University, including programs of study ranging from associate to doctoral degrees and over 11,500 students at multiple locations.

The process of transitioning from a college a university was long and meticulous. Focus groups were formed consisting of adjunct faculty, students, alumni and the alumni advisory board, to determine what the student body, alumni, and faculty would think about the change in designation. After approval from the focus groups, the change needed to be approved by the faculty senate, and finally the Board of Trustees.

Wilmington College officially became a university after being approved by the Board of Trustees and the Middles States Association of Colleges and Schools. The name change helped to better reflect the emphasis on baccalaureate and higher degree programs that distinguish Wilmington University from other community colleges, as well as effectively communicate the full commitment and mission of the University.
