June 29, 2007Mt. Laurel, NJ. Presidents Dr. Jack Varsalona, of Wilmington College; Dr. Robert Messina, Jr., of Burlington County College; and Dr. Kenneth Ender of Cumberland County College held a joint press conference on Friday, June 29, 2007 at Burlington County College's Enterprise Center.
The New Jersey Commission on Higher Education has granted licensure to Wilmington College to offer select degree completion programs and courses at three southern New Jersey community colleges. This is the first time in history that the New Jersey Commission on Higher Education has granted licensure to an out-of-state college to offer degree programs and courses at multiple sites on community college campuses in New Jersey.
The College's New Jersey locations include Burlington County College at Mt. Laurel, Cumberland County College at Vineland and Salem Community College at Carneys Point.
Starting this fall, degree completion programs in Accounting, Behavioral Science, Business Management, Criminal Justice, Human Resource Management and Psychology will be offered at Burlington County College. Programs in Behavioral Science, Business Management, Criminal Justice, Human Resource Management and Nursing will be offered at Cumberland, while a variety of classes will be offered at Salem.
Wilmington College students who are New Jersey residents welcome the opportunity the expansion brings. Dawn Jones, a resident of Penns Grove, is currently pursuing her Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice at the College.
“I think the move to New Jersey will be great, especially for those who commute back and forth from New Jersey to Delaware,” says Jones. “Many students come from all over New Jersey and this would make it easier on them.”
“This expansion meets the need for four-year institutions in southern New Jersey and reinforces the idea of making higher education more accessible to anyone motivated to learn,” says Dr. Jack Varsalona. “It is closely aligned with our mission to provide access to all and to deliver programs at locations convenient to students.”
President Dr. Robert Messina, Jr. is also looking forward to the expansion.
“We are both pleased and excited to have Wilmington College teach courses at Burlington,” says Messina. “This partnership enables students to earn their Wilmington College degree without ever leaving BCC's campus. This facilitates the transfer process for our students and accommodates them by being close to home.”
Cumberland County president Kenneth Ender views the partnership as a great opportunity for the community.
“The partnership with Wilmington College will improve the community's quality of life since residents will get additional opportunities to earn bachelor's degrees at Cumberland County College,” says Ender. “The partnership brings higher education within the reach of many people who aren't able to commute or relocate due to job and family responsibilities.”
All courses will be taught by experienced Wilmington College faculty. The College will offer the same student-centered services that it always has with registration and advising available on site. Students can also register for classes at any Wilmington College location.
Wilmington College offers convenient class schedules for working adults, the option to transfer up to 75 credits into bachelor's degree programs, and possible credit for prior learning.
