Big Run Spanning the Halftime Break Propels Delaware State Women’s Basketball over Wilmington, 88-46

Four players finished in double figures for the Delaware State University women’s basketball team as an overpowering second half sent the Hornets to an 88-46 victory over Wilmington University in Memorial Hall on Wednesday night.
Tenicia Spence scored 22 points for the Wildcats (0-5 overall) to extend her 20 plus point performance to four straight games, but the Hornets (1-3 overall) used a 50-21 second half to pull away from the Wildcats in the second stanza.
The Hornets, an NCAA Division I team that competes in the Mid-Eastern Athletics Conference, picked up their first win of the season and first win for first year head coach Tamika Louis by shooting 54 percent from the floor (34-for-63).
The home team was led by four players in double digits as Tierra Hawkins tied Spence for the game high 22 points, shooting 9-for-14 from the floor and 4-for-5 from the foul line. Tasia Bristow collected 18 points off the bench while starters Keyanna Tate (12) and Deanna Harmon (10) also added double figures. Hawkins led all players with 12 rebounds, picking up the double-double.
The Wildcats were out rebounded, 43-28, including a 14-8 advantage on the offensive glass. The Hornets turned the 14 offensive rebounds into 14 second chance points. Allison McDonald led the Wildcats with six rebounds for the game, while Spence and Tiaja Harrold added five boards each.
Trailing by six points with 3:53 remaining in the first half following a jumper by Cari Callaway (26-20), The Wildcats struggled to stay close for the rest of the opening frame as the Hornets used a 12-5 run to head into the locker room with a 38-25 advantage.
The Hornets continued their run after the halftime break, coming out and putting the first 14 points of the second half to open a large margin at 52-25.
The Wildcats shot 32 percent from the floor for the game, going 16-for-50 from the floor, including a poor 2-for-16 from beyond the three-point arc.
Wilmington remains on the road for one more week as the Wildcats get back into basketball action on Monday after the Thanksgiving break. The Wildcats head to Bloomsburg to face the PSAC foe and former head coach Bill Cleary starting at 7 p.m.
