Wildcat Volleyball Middle Blocker Katie Shorter Becomes First AVCA All-Region Player in Program History

The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced its 2012 Division II All-Region Teams late last week and for the first time in program history a Wilmington University student-athlete was honored as Katie Shorter earned a spot on the All-East Region squad.

Shorter (Pasadena, Md./Broadneck) becomes the first Wildcat to earn an All-Region selection since the University became NCAA eligible in 2004. She helped lead the team to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Championship match as the South Division’s No. 1 seed as the team finished with a 28-6 overall record.

The junior middle blocker also picked up numerous CACC awards, becoming the first Wildcat to earn the CACC Player of the Year award since 2004 while also earning First Team All-CACC accolades. During the season, Shorter was the CACC Player of the Week on September 17.

Shorter led the CACC is all four blocking categories, becoming the Wildcats all-time leader in blocks in only three years of action. She led the conference with 61 solo blocks, 114 block assists, 175 total blocks, and 1.46 blocks per set. As of games played through November 18, Shorter is ranked sixth in NCAA Division II in blocks per set.

She was also ninth in the CACC in points (352.0) and sixth in hitting percentage (234-84-55-.270), averaging a team’s third best 2.00 kills per set.

The 6-3 junior had a career day at the net against Caldwell, a five set come-from-behind victory for the Wildcats on October 20. She pounded out a career best 15 kills with only one error, hitting .519 for the match while collecting a solo block and eight block assists. She out did herself once again in the CACC Semifinals, however, collecting nine block assists and had a total of 13 blocks in the Tournament victory.

Shorter was the only CACC member to be the All-East Region team, while Dominican’s Jordan Fuller and Caldwell’s Susan McDonough earned AVCA East Region Honorable Mention status.
