Wilmington University Vice President Dr. Laverne T. Harmon Wins Prestigious Education Award

Wilmington University Vice President Dr. Laverne T. Harmon has received the Educator of the Year Award from the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa Inc., Rho Chapter, for her contributions to the education community.

Dr. Harmon accepted the award at the organization’s 12th Annual Scholarship and Awards Luncheon on Saturday, March 23, at the Executive Banquet and Conference Center in Newark, Delaware.

Dr. Harmon, a lifelong educator, has received awards for leadership and service in her field, including the American Council on Education Leadership Award and the National Association of University Women Community Service Award. She is a member of the International Women’s Forum and is the United Way Education Chair for Delaware.

In her position as University Vice President, Dr. Harmon is a member of the President’s Executive Team and provides leadership for the areas of Student Affairs, Human Resources, Admissions, Recruiting, Marketing, Career Services, Alumni Relations, Development and Athletics.

“I greatly respect and admire the women of Phi Delta Kappa. I'm sure that, many years from now, the students they’re helping will remember them for the guidance, encouragement, support and mentoring they provided,” Harmon said. “I hope the members of Phi Delta Kappa never forget for a moment the impact they have made, and will continue to make, on the lives of youth.”

The mission of the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa is to stimulate professional growth among teachers; to promote the highest teaching ideals; to encourage development of the potential of youth and to provide college scholarship assistance for youth.

The National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa’s headquarters is in Chicago, Illinois. For more information about the sorority, visit http://nspdkeasternregion.org/html/history.html.
