Faculty and staff from the College of Arts and Sciences at Wilmington University gathered in excitement last week to celebrate the University’s most recent accomplishment. After an in-depth evaluation, the college’s Legal Studies program was granted approval by the American Bar Association (ABA). The program was found to provide a quality paralegal education and also satisfied the stringent requirements set forth by the ABA’s Standing Committee on Paralegals.

During the approval process, the University’s Legal Studies program underwent rigorous scrutiny of every facet of the program. The American Bar Association approved the curriculum, faculty, recruiting and admission practices, library and computer resources, and student services inherent in the program.

"I appreciate the thorough evaluation done by the American Bar Association,” said Amy O’Dell, Esq., Program Coordinator for Legal Studies, “This approval validates the time, energy, and effort that our faculty and advisory board have put into creating a quality program for our students.”

Wilmington University began offering a Bachelor of Science in Legal Studies program in the fall of 2003. The curriculum is designed to prepare students to become paralegals or legal assistants working under the supervision of an attorney or to continue their studies in law. Courses include such topics as,’ Legal Writing’, ‘Criminal Law’, ‘Civil Procedure’, and ‘LSAT Preparation,’ among others. The Legal Studies degree can be completed at Wilmington University’s New Castle and Dover locations. Additionally, the University offers a 24-credit post-baccalaureate certificate in Legal Studies.

The ABA approval is also great news for current students in the Legal Studies program. “I’m very excited about this approval,” said Amy O’Dell, Esq., “We hope this will help generate new professional development opportunities for our students through the Delaware Paralegal Association as well as expand their employment options nationwide.”
