From the Class of '72

Cass Robert's is a Lifelong Learner with Creative Flair!

Cass Roberts, or Cathleen L. Nemeth as she was known when she graduated from Wilmington College in 1972, is a woman that has carried the Wilmington University banner well.  When she completed her degree in History-Government, Wilmington College was considered just an “experiment” on DuPont Highway… a long way from the institution that we are a part of today.

Cass recalls that, “The teachers were fantastic and of high caliber with a true dedication and spirit to get you through the educational process. Dr. Ross, Wilmington College’s first president, took quite a gamble, and I am glad it paid off. I have always been pleased with my degree and the opportunities it afforded me. The college, at the time, was a place for students that didn't always fit the typical university/college student profile, and that was a refreshing and courageous change in the educational process.”

Cass says that after a short period at the University of Delaware, her mother read about Wilmington College in the newspaper, and she thought it would be a good place for her to complete her degree.  While Mrs. Roberts attended the school, she also worked for many different offices as a part of the Work-Study program.

After graduating from Wilmington College, Cass worked in several different capacities, until she retired from the City of Gastonia, North Carolina’s Planning and Transportation Department in May of 2014.  It was in 2011, however, that this inspiring alumna discovered another passion, cartooning.

Cass shares that her love for art actually originated during a time of great stress.  She recalls, “Around 2011, my mother and my husband had a number of serious health issues and my job at the City was tremendously stressful.  One day at work, I started to doodle. And from then on, I began to draw characters in pencil and ink with some quip - my topics were work related, or about retirement, or funny things that happen to everyday people. Someone would tell me a story of what happened to them and from those ideas, observing people, and their reactions, as well as my own, I had plenty of topics to "draw" from.”  She then began to share her cartoons with friends and family, and their response was so positive that she knew she was on to something, and Cassy Lou Cartoons was born.

Over the years, Cass’ gift for drawing has evolved into colorful works of humor and wit.  She even dabbles in fashion drawings.  She currently is “working with the Newark, Delaware Art Alliance and the Gastonia, North Carolina Arts on Main to have my note cards in their gift shops.”  Mrs. Roberts also has her eye on potentially selling her work on etsy.com, eBay, and even writing some self-published illustrated books.  So, make sure that you are on the lookout for many great things to come from the pen of this early WilmU Alumna!
