The Fifth Annual Pi Gamma Mu Polar Bear Plunge Was a Huge Success
On Sunday, February 1st, several students, alumni, and friends of Wilmington University gathered to raise money for the Delaware Special Olympics. They chose to put their personal comfort aside and plunge into the freezing waters of the Atlantic Ocean as part of the Annual Polar Bear Plunge!
Among the brave souls representing WilmU, were 18 plungers and 12 cheering towel holders! This dedicated group banned together to raise over $3650 for the Special Olympics. And while bodies shivered from the arctic air and frigid waters, hearts were definitely warmed by the the sight of a beach crowded with thousands of people supporting this noble cause.
One of the participants, the Pi Gamma Mu Chapter Chair, Stefanie Szczerba said, "If you haven’t “plunged,” it’s difficult to describe the experience. When you’re caught up in the moment, you don’t feel the breeze coming off the ocean or the iciness of the sand. You’re surrounded by thousands of people, including your own WilmU family, who are ready to brave the frigid Atlantic to support Delaware athletes. Whether you’re a “polar bear” or a “towel holder,” everyone shares in the experience and the excitement. What started as a Pi Gamma Mu community service project is now a WilmU tradition. Each year, we’ve grown in size and our “sea of WilmU green” is becoming more visible on the beach. Thank you for your support, and we look forward to seeing you on the beach with us in 2016."
