Wildcats Invaded Historic Lewes and Now Have their Eyes Fixed on Old New Castle
On Saturday, April 11th, the Wilmington University Wildcats descended upon Delaware’s oldest town for a beautiful day of exploration, learning, food, and games. The weather was ideal, and the event was a complete success. The mayor of Lewes even stopped by the reception at Irish Eyes Restaurant to join in the Wildcat celebration!
Among the many highlights of the weekend, was a riveting presentation by our own Gene Modzelewski, Co-Chair of the WilmU Alumni Kent and Sussex Chapter. He masterfully retold the story of the HMS Debraak, the mystery-shrouded ship, raised 188 years after it’s fateful sinking. The lecture was followed by a tour of the vessels actual hull in Cape Henlopen, DE. In addition to the tour of the Debraak, attendees were also granted access to the Zwaanedael Museum, the Cannonball House, the Ryves Holt House, and many other local attractions.
Although the adventure in Lewes has come to a conclusion, the fun is yet to begin for Old New Castle! On May 16th, the Wildcats will gather to explore the history and lore of this historic town. This first-ever event will begin with registration at the New Castle Senior Center (parking will be provided), continue with an exploration of Historic New Castle, and conclude with a reception including refreshments and spirits at 3:00PM. The prowlers will stroll along the cobblestone streets touring the many homes, gardens, and public buildings that witnessed the rebirth of America at the end of the Civil War. The first 50 registrants will receive a free Wildcat Prowl t-shirt.
