Wilmington University to Host International Speaker Rachel McAnallen at April 9 Delaware Math Coalition Workshop
Open to all area math teachers, McAnallen's motivational "Fun and Friendly Algebra" highlights hands-on methodology for math educators.
On April 9, Wilmington University College of Arts and Sciences will host internationally recognized speaker Rachel McAnallen in a special Delaware Math Coalition Workshop, "Fun and Friendly Algebra - Absolutely No Train Problems" in the Doberstein Admissions Center auditorium on the New Castle campus from 8:15 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.
The event is open to all area math teachers. A light breakfast and lunch will be provided. Admission is $65 and pre-registration is required for this program. To register, click here, then click on "Additional Info." Next, click on the highlighted attachment to go to the registration form. Cash or check only will be accepted.
All registrations must be received by no later than Wednesday, April 6, at 5 p.m. For assistance with registration, contact Dedra Poe at (302) 356-6984.
As a speaker, McAnallen is both dynamic and engaging, providing a touch of entertainment to deliver her math messages. Also known as "Ms. Math," McAnallen will instruct workshop attendees in how to teach math facts using algebraic approaches. Her techniques for educators ultimately help students to become "number detectives" and problem-solvers. Manipulatives (hands-on tools used to enhance learning at the level of the senses) will be used extensively to help attending participants understand the workshop's concepts.
Wilmington University Math Chair Diane Bansbach recently met with the Delaware Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the state chapter of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, to discuss the upcoming workshop.
“This workshop is an outstanding opportunity for our students and other educators to gain experience collaborating with others in the classroom and working with real-world applications for algebra,” said Bansbach. “Both students and current teachers are encouraged to attend the workshop because our goal is to help math educators become more effective teachers and promote mathematical reasoning through the use of models and manipulatives.”
The mission of the Delaware Mathematics Coalition is to identify, endorse and design high quality, synergistic professional learning opportunities and experiences that support research-based norms for teaching and learning mathematics. The organization envisions classrooms in which confident and competent problem solvers flourish, with all students productively engaged and all teachers supported in their efforts to become more knowledgeable and reflective practitioners.
Delaware math teachers communicate high standards and expectations for students as they incorporate and exemplify the instructional practices described in the Common Core State Standards.
