Wilmington University Hosts Military Appreciation Day

WilmU Wildcats show support for our active duty and military veteran students on April 16 at 2 special baseball and softball games.

On Saturday, April 16, Wilmington University Athletics and the Military Affairs office will host a special Military Appreciation Day at the University's baseball and softball games at Wilson Field,13 Leland Lane in New Castle, and at Asbury Field, 320 N. DuPont Highway, also in New Castle. Both games will begin at 11:45 a.m.

Lance Kirby, Executive Director for Delaware Commission of Veterans Affairs, will throw out the first pitch at the baseball game between the WilmU Wildcats and Chestnut Hill College. Kirby is a retired USAF Chief Master Sargent and a graduate of Wilmington University.

The Dover Air Force Base Honor Guard will present the colors at the Wildcats baseball game and a member of the honor guard, Senior Airman Oakland, will sing the national anthem. The Delaware Patriot Guard, whose internet-based membership attends the funerals of members of the U.S. military, will form a flag line to honor and recognize all service members, veterans and their families.

At the same time on April 16, again beginning at 11:45 a.m., the Wildcat softball team will face Felician University at Asbury Field. Dr. Jack Cunningham, Assistant Vice President of Wilmington University's athletic programs, will sing the national anthem. Tech Sergeant James Paul Boris (USAF, retired), who is Wildcat Head Coach Mike Shehorn's father-in-law, will throw out the first pitch.

All veterans or service members will be invited to stand on the foul line for the presentation of the colors and the national anthem at both fields.

All service members and veterans with I.D. who attend either game will receive a free T-shirt. Free water ice, soft pretzels and bottled water will also be provided for attendees at both games.

“Wilmington University is honored to recognize the men and women who currently serve our country and those veterans who have paved the way with their service,” said Jim Webb, Director of Military Affairs at Wilmington University. “I'm certain that everyone who attends these games will also want to express their sincere gratitude to the families of those who serve or have served.”
