Wilmington University Student Teaching Residents to Present at 2016 National Student Teaching & Supervision Conference

Year-long teaching residents at Richey Elementary School will present at 10th annual conference April 29-30 at West Chester University.

Wilmington University students Sierra Gruff, M.E.E, Audrey Shearon, B.S. and Melodie Miller, B.S. will deliver a poster session presentation at the 2016 National Student Teaching & Supervision Conference (NSTSC). The conference will be held April 29 and 30 in the Sykes Student Union of West Chester University, located on West Rosedale Avenue in West Chester, Pennsylvania.

The poster session, “A Year-Long Clinical Residency Internship: Who Cares?” is the student teachers' perspective of the extended field experience that a year long residency program provides an aspiring teacher. The presentation will highlight the benefits of a year-long residency from the point of view of both the student teacher and the student. The student teachers will also discuss how the co-teaching model enhances both teaching and learning in the classroom and the additional opportunities each experienced throughout their residency.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the NSTSC. It is the second time the conference will be held at West Chester University.

The conference is the capstone event for teacher candidate preparation. It provides professional educators with the opportunity to demonstrate best practices as they relate to student teaching and the clinical experience. It also highlights the enhancement of knowledge, skills and disposition of teacher candidates, cooperating teachers, administrators and university supervisors.

“It’s unusual for students in any initial teacher preparation program to be selected as presenters at a national conference," said Dr. John Gray, Dean of Wilmington University College of Education. "The opportunity for our students to experience what it is like to be featured at a national conference will enhance their professional credentials and should increase their commitment to continued professional development. The content our students have to offer conference participants will be substantial, enlightening and appreciated.”

"We feel very honored to be selected for this opportunity," said Sierra Gruff, one of the three resident student teachers at Richey Elementary School. "We are all extremely grateful and hope to make Wilmington University proud during our presentation. Our experience at Richey Elementary has been rewarding. Being surrounded by a supportive staff and administration has provided us the opportunity to flourish as student teachers."
