Wilmington University Scholarship Recipient Highlight

Michelle Whiteman

Wilmington University is very intentional about helping students reach their dreams of a higher education.  They are constantly creating ways for alumni, staff, faculty and the community to join together to raise funds for student scholarships.  A couple of the largest opportunities to support student scholarships are the Annual Green and White Scholarship Ball in the Fall and the Scholarship Golf Classic that is taking place this month.

Through the generosity of the WilmU community, lives are being forever changed and futures are being made brighter.  One of the best ways to get a feel for the impact that your generosity has on individuals, is to hear directly from them.  Please allows us to introduce you to one of the many scholarship recipients, Michelle Whiteman.  Michelle has received her Bachelors in Education and is currently pursuing her M.Ed in Special Education.

I cannot express enough gratitude for the generosity from Wilmington University and the donors here today that gave me a chance to peruse my dream of a college education and to be an educator. Receiving my Masters in Special Education at Wilmu is exciting to me because I am an Alumni; in fact, two years ago I stood here expressing my gratitude before receiving my Bachelors in Education.

When many of you think of the support you give by being a donor you most likely think you are helping a young student out of high school go to college, we I am going to tell you who else you are assisting.  Let me tell you how significant it was to receive a scholarship.

I am blessed to have the support of my husband and three teenagers, being a scholarship recipient financially has been the only way I would have been able to continue my education.  While receiving my undergrad I was able to work to help support going to school and my family.  Last year I while starting my master’s program I suffered a stroke, talk about life throwing you a curve ball!!  After many doctors’ appointments I found out I would need open heart surgery July 7th  , I was not able to work and I panicked because I was starting classes July 6th!  I called Wilmu to explain my circumstances and was worried I would lose my scholarship because of canceling classes.    I was reassured that I would be able to continue when I was well enough and that was not a stress or worry about that.  I was able to pick up my classes this fall and now in just a couple of days I will receive my masters!  And hey let’s not forget I have my oldest daughter pursuing her degree in the medical profession.  I am just one person with a story, there are so many other students that receive a scholarship that have a story and would want to be here to thank you for your support.

I am proud with all I have accomplished in my life and I am looking forward to what I have yet to conquer. I want to thank Wilmu for the positive influence, helped me receive an excellent education, and accommodating me is in so many ways to make it all possible.

The scholarship that I have been awarded will bring me a step closer to living out my dreams working in the field of Special Education and my hearts true desire students with autism. I have always had a determination to continue my education, which Wilmu and the support of the scholarship has made possible for me.”
