Cyber Talent Makes for Success at Security BSides Delaware Conference at Wilmington University

Popular cyber/tech conference promotes learning and friendly competition with help from sponsoring companies and institutions.

On Friday, October 7, the Security BSides Delaware Conference returned to Wilmington University’s Doberstein Admissions Center on the New Castle campus.

The annual conference welcomed all those who are interested in learning the latest in computer network security in addition to testing their hacking and digital forensics skills. The 2-day conference featured 3 tracks of talks on today’s hottest cyber topics and a full offering of workshops and classes. Conference speakers came from as far away as China this year, giving an international dimension to the BSides Conference that is unlike other local conferences. This year’s BSides Conference included more cyber competitions, including a wireless “Capture the Flag,” a “Pros vs. Joes” Capture the Flag contest and a lockpick village.

Back by popular demand this year was the popular “Spawncamp,” a hands-on fun and learning cyber camp for children of attendees. Kids were encouraged to build robots, participate in interactive games and get creative with code. Moms and dads attending the conference were happy to know that their kids would be occupied, have fun  and fully participate in a tech-oriented learning experience that paralleled the rest of the conference.

“BSides Delaware is the oldest cyber conference in Delaware,” said Joshua Marpet, senior vice president of Compliance and managed services at CyberGRC, a governance, risk and compliance company. “It’s a fantastic place for cyber enthusiasts and tech people to network with companies and agencies as they participate in the talks, cyber workshops and competitions that take place. Students have a great opportunity to interact with pipeline recruiters who can lead them to real world jobs. I’ve been at BSides for a number of years and I’ve even seen recruiters from top banking institutions, the FBI and the National Security Agency recruit new employees right from the auditorium floor.”
