Dr. Stacey Graves: Nurse Practitioner and Role Model
Wilmington University graduate recognized by American Association of Nurse Practitioners as one of Delaware's leading NPs.
Once a year, the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) honors a nurse practitioner (NP) in each state who has helped to increase awareness of the profession. This year, Dr. Stacey Graves' dedication to educating the next generation of nurses caught the organization's attention and earned its recognition.
Graves, an assistant professor in the nurse practitioner program at Wilmington University, will receive the 2017 Advocate State Award for Excellence during a special reception at the AANP's national conference in Philadelphia this coming June.
"This prestigious award recognizes what we already know and value about Dr. Graves," said Denise Westbrook, Dean of the College of Health Professions. "She emanates a passion for nursing through her excellence in practice and her contributions to education.
"Our graduate and doctoral nursing students benefit from Dr. Graves' investment in the profession," Westbrook added. "She's always striving to equip our future practitioners with proficiency and with a desire to make a difference."
For Graves, a working family nurse practitioner, the teaching and the treating join seamlessly. "As an educator, it is important for me to ensure that new NPs are sufficiently prepared to enter the healthcare arena and provide safe, quality care," she said. "I'm always looking for ways to engage the students and provide up-to-date information on current clinical practice.
"I visit students in the clinical setting to perform site evaluations and offer feedback to improve their practice," she said. "I often bring students to the office with me for clinical rotations when they have difficulty finding sites."
Established in 1993, the Advocate State Award for Excellence spotlights those who have made significant contributions in bringing the work of nurse practitioners to the public eye. Past recipients have included physicians and legislators. NPs have been recognized for clinical practices as well as for leadership, research, education or community efforts.
The AANP represents more than 220,000 nurse practitioners nationwide, promoting their roles as high-quality, cost-effective, comprehensive and patient-centered healthcare providers.
