From the First State to the Final Frontier

Find out how NASA-funded opportunities can launch Delaware students' space research careers

There's a reason why rocket science is "rocket science." It takes solid science, technology, engineering and mathematics education and a highly trained, tech-savvy workforce to escape gravity and the earth's atmosphere. The Delaware Space Grant aims to keep First State students competitive in this field, and it's the goal of Dr. Brian Chad Starks to increase diversity in rocket science.

Dr. Starks, an associate director of the Delaware Space Grant, will discuss the program's scholarship, fellowship, and internship opportunities in his talk, "Pick Up Some STEAM and Get Excited About Space Grant." The presentation is scheduled for Wednesday, February 8 at 12:30 p.m. in Room 309 of the Audrey K. Doberstein Admisssions Center on Wilmington University's New Castle campus, 320 N. DuPont Highway.

Dr. Starks, who is also an assistant professor of criminology and human services at Lynchburg College in Virginia, will encourage students to overcome the personal obstacles they face in pursuing their higher education degrees.

Established in 1991, the Delaware Space Grant is a NASA-funded consortium that promotes STEM education in the state in order to train students, researchers and teachers and, in turn, help to supply the brainpower that space exploration demands.

The consortium is headquartered at the University of Delaware, but the opportunities it sponsors are available to students at all of the state's participating schools, including Wilmington University.

For more information about Dr. Starks' talk or about Delaware Space Grant opportunities, visit the consortium's website at delspace.org or contact Dr. Milton Muldrow Jr., chair of WilmU's environmental science and policy program, at milton.x.muldrow@wilmu.edu or (302) 356-6835.
