Wilmington University Collects Hundreds of Toys for CBS3 ‘Joy of Sharing’ Toy Drive Benefiting Salvation Army
New, unwrapped toys will be donated to needy families across Delaware.
Wilmington University wrapped up its partnership with CBS 3 Philadelphia’s “Joy of Sharing” Toy Drive on Thursday and the results are heartwarming.
According to University officials, nearly 800 toys were collected and will be given to needy children through the Salvation Army.
The campaign began in late November and ends today, December 19.
“The financial strain of rental costs, utility bills and providing the necessities of life for families is painful,” said Jennifer Loveland of The Salvation Army of Delaware. “Many have to choose between one bill or another in order to keep food on the table. With community support, The Salvation Army is able to work Christmas miracles for thousands of families throughout Delaware.”
Toy collection bins were set up across the New Castle campus and many of the University’s 12 other locations, including the Wilson Graduate Center, Dover, and sites in Burlington County College and Cumberland County College. Participants were asked to drop off a new, unwrapped toy in those bins.
Loveland said that donations like those collected from the Joy of Sharing drive often go to fulfill the “wish lists” of children around the holidays. This is made possible by the Salvation Army Angel Trees, found at the Concord and Christiana Malls in New Castle County, Delaware, where children’s wish lists are placed on an angel tag in hopes that someone will select theirs. These gifts are distributed to the families the week before Christmas.
“The participation we've had in the ‘Joy of Sharing’ campaign really shows the generosity and holiday spirit of the entire University community,” said Dr. Regina Allen-Sharpe, Senior Director of Career Services and Student Life. “We were happy to get involved with this campaign and we’re even happier to see that so many people have donated toys so that kids can have the holiday they deserve.”
