Wilmington University Hosts National Title IX Certification Course in Dover

Training will benefit schools, colleges and universities in the investigation of campus sexual misconduct and civil rights violations.

Wilmington University is hosting the Title IX Investigator Training and Certification Course today and tomorrow, July 21 and 22, at its Dover site, 3282 Dupont Highway in Dover.

Many may be aware of Title IX, a portion of the Education Amendments of 1972 as it pertains the prohibition of discrimination on the basis of sex in educational institutions, perhaps especially as it pertains to NCAA sports. This week's training, conducted by the Association of Title IX Administrators (ATIXA), provides the training needed to develop, implement and operate a civil rights investigation model for campus sexual misconduct.

"We feel this course is exceptionally timely, given the number of reports of sexual misconduct on U.S. campuses," said Nicole Romano, Senior Director of Human Resources at Wilmington University. "ATIXA's training is based on the perception that sexual misconduct is not so much a conduct issue but an issue of civil rights discrimination. Their method for handling sexual misconduct complaints is about resolving sexual harassment using a civil rights investigation model rather than a police-based model. It has a strong record of success that Wilmington University is proud to assist in making available to the institutions attending here this week."

Over 130 registrants from 40 schools, colleges and universities are attending at the Dover location through tomorrow -- some from as far away as Texas. ATIXA designed the training to benefit anyone who investigates any type of civil rights complaint, including hate crimes, gender bias, racial, religious, ethic, and other discriminatory acts against any group or protected class. Each attendee will receive ATIXA certification as trained investigators in the resolution of harassment and sexual misconduct cases.
