Underground Railroad Symposium April 21 at Wilmington University

Area experts will present and host a discussion on Delaware's role in the history and success of the Underground Railroad.

Wilmington University College of Arts and Sciences, in conjunction with the Peoples Library and Student Life department, will host a symposium on the Underground Railroad April 21 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. in the Doberstein Admissions Center auditorium at the main campus in New Castle.

The symposium is free of charge and open to the community. Light refreshments will be provided.

The panelists and their areas of expertise for the discussion are:

·  Dr. Jack Briggs – Overview of the Underground Railroad

·  Syl Woolford – Delaware’s role in the Underground Railroad

·  Bob Seeley – Abuses of the slaves and members of the Underground Railroad

Each panelist will deliver a presentation on their respective area of interest in the historical Civil War era network of secret routes and safe houses that provided runaway slaves with a pathway to freedom.

“This year marks the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War," said Lynn Moore, History Chair, Wilmington University College of Arts and Sciences. "Wilmington University is very fortunate to present these three experts on the history of the Underground Railroad, a concerted effort of people and resources that created a network of safe havens for escaping slaves along the northward trail to freedom before and during the War."
