Wilmington University Presents "KNOW YOUR RIGHTS" Forum on May 28

Community open forum will promote dialogue regarding law enforcement and understanding citizen rights and responsibilities.

On Thursday, May 28, Wilmington University College of Social and Behavioral Sciences will present "Know Your Rights," a forum for understanding each citizen's rights and responsibilities, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 28, in the Pratt Student Center on the New Castle campus. The University's Criminal Justice Program will sponsor the event.

This event is free and the public is encouraged to attend. No registration is required and free parking is available on campus. Light refreshments will be served.

Wilmington University presents this community forum as a way to promote open dialogue about the rights and responsibilities every citizen has - or does not have - when dealing with situations where law enforcement is present.

The forum will be moderated by William Chapman, Wilmington University Constable and retired Delaware State Police Trooper, with the objective of increased awareness and understanding within the community.

“Our goal is to get individuals to understand what the police are trying to accomplish in neighborhoods while performing their duties,” said Chapman. “Hopefully, this dialogue will also increase awareness and understanding of citizens' responsibilities and rights in these situations and help to eliminate the distrust between the community and police.”

The discussion will include the expectations of both the police and citizens during encounters with law enforcement from being stopped for questioning to detainment and possible arrest.
