Delaware's 6th Annual DigiGirlz Day Held May 3 at Wilmington University

8th and 9th grade girls explored the possibilities open to them in STEM-based high tech careers.

On Tuesday, May 3, Wilmington University’s Doberstein Admissions Center auditorium was filled with approximately 150, 8th and 9th grade girls for DigiGirlz Day. The day was dedicated to young technologists attending breakout sessions with 2 larger group meetings and lunch provided in the auditorium.

DigiGirlz Day is extremely popular every year. The program is free and open to 8th and 9th grade girls in public, private, charter and home schools.Teachers are also encouraged to attend with their students as a classroom activity, but individual students may also participate.

The girls spent a fun packed, educational day learning about careers in technology and getting an inside glimpse of what it might be like to work in the high tech field. This year’s DigiGirlz Day featured several potential career tracks including robotics, video game creation and cyber security. Girls participated in activities like writing code for simple video games, building robots or learning about the tools professionals use to fight computer hackers. "We were excited to have the pleasure of working with Microsoft and Delaware Department of Technology and Information (DTI) again this year," said Tasha Jackson, Assistant Professor in the Wilmington University College of Technology. "Our goal is always to provide a memorable experience and introduce a variety of technology disciplines to 8th and 9th grade girls from State of Delaware."

DigiGirlz Day is designed to encourage young women at these critical ages to explore the possibilities available in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The day is sponsored by Delaware’s Department of Technology and Information, the Delaware Center for Educational Technology, Wilmington University and Microsoft. Participation is limited to 150 girls.
