Wilmington University Scholarship Awarded to Student Amanda Burgess

Mary Campbell Center resident awarded a full undergraduate scholarship to help toward goal of helping victims of domestic violence

On Wednesday, August 31, the world changed for the better for Amanda Burgess when Dr. Peter Bailey, Vice President, External and International Affairs, presented her with a comprehensive scholarship to complete her bachelor’s degree in the Wilmington University College of Behavioral Science. Dr. Bailey made the presentation at a special luncheon that was held at the Mary Campbell Center, which provides residential long term care for individuals with physical and intellectual disabilities. The residence is known for its homelike environment, unique facilities and supportive staff who encourage the individual growth and independence of each of its 67 residents.

Burgess, who has cerebral palsy and is confined to a wheelchair, relies upon a text-to-speech app on her iPad to communicate with others. She experienced domestic violence first hand prior to her arrival at the Mary Campbell Center. Her goal is to work with others in victim advocacy and in raising awareness against domestic violence at every level she can reach.

“What you do here at the Campbell Center is unbelievable,” said Bailey during the presentation. “Wilmington University is proud to help motivated people like Amanda realize their goals despite what others may perceive as limitations. Her special needs do not limit her mind and we support her ability to use her education as the means by which she will be able to help others who have suffered domestic abuse.”

Danielle Capano, Burgess’ case manager, agreed saying, “Education is key for victims.” Essentially, those who are educated in the frequency and damaging effects of domestic violence are the people who lead the way as victim advocates, legislative change agents and inspired social service providers.

Burgess will take some courses on campus, joining with other undergraduate students in a traditional classroom setting in addition to taking a number of her required courses online as part of her hybrid class schedule.

“I am very grateful to Wilmington University for this opportunity to earn my degree,” said Burgess. “It’s the best start I could ever hope for and I will use what I learn to help others in the fight against domestic violence.”
