Taking the Team Approach to a Cure

For the 10th year, WilmU wheels will "Bike to the Bay" for MS research

Every year for the past decade, a team of Wilmington University cyclists have pedaled from Dover to Rehoboth Beach to support the search for a cure for multiple sclerosis. On Saturday, October 7, they'll be making the 75-mile trip again, and you can join them in their mission, with or without saddling up.

MS Bike to the Bay, an annual fundraising event organized by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, promotes research into the autoimmune disorder that attacks the body's central nervous system. Many of WilmU's 12 faculty, staff, student, and community members riding this year — as with previous years' participants — have a personal connection to the debilitating disease, said library director Jim McCloskey.

"It's exciting and inspiring knowing we're doing something for a good cause," said McCloskey, who is co-captaining the team along with Shannon Netta of the College of Online and Experiential Learning. "The ride is great exercise, a lot of fun, and a wonderful way to promote Wilmington University's support of community initiatives that help people."

The planned route takes riders from Delaware Technical Community College's Terry Campus in Dover southeast to Delaware Seashore State Park and across the Indian River Inlet bridge. Riders will benefit from the level terrain and enjoy the scenic views of lower Delaware's communities and farmlands before reaching the beaches.

The 2017 Bike to the Bay will be McCloskey's second ride with the WilmU team, and he recalled how it welcomed a newcomer to the sport on a hot Saturday morning in September 2016.

"Most of the time, we were together in a pack, encouraging each other and offering tips," he said. "We rode as a team. That was neat, and it helped us in being able to go the distance."
