Topics in Higher Education: Share your Opinion

The Wilmington University Online Facebook Page is dedicated to helping students establish an interactive presence on Facebook by engaging with their campus community. We want to hear from you, so please use this page as a forum. Below are two of the topics in higher education being discussed now on the page, share your opinions by writing on the page's wall!

Integrating Facebook into Classroom Instruction

Should Facebook be integrated into classroom instruction? Does it improve communication between students and instructors? On the hand, is it too much of an intrusion into students’ personal and social lives for educators to be using it as an educational method? Is it just too much of a distraction from learning? Gain a broader perspective of this topic by reading this article on 100 Ways You Should Be Using Facebook in Your Classroom.

New College Software Seeks to Personalize Recommendations

Imagine a system that collects information about students in order to makes useful suggestion regarding course schedules, instructors, and services. Here are a few examples of how this system could benefit students:

  • New student gets a link to the online orientation.
  • A student with a high GPA gets a link to the honors program; a student with low grades will be pointed to tutoring services.
  • Based on the pattern of classes you’ve taken in the past, a class schedule will be created - already screened them for prereqs. They also don’t have a time conflict with when you said you were going to work.

There is a recently developed technology system called Sherpa which does just this. With more information about students, the suggestions could get much more specific. What do you think about this type of technology? Is it a great new convenience or is data mining student information inappropriate?

Blackboard Tips 101

Hiding old courses in Blackboard

If you have too many courses listed on your Blackboard Welcome Page and would like to hide the old ones, here’s how you can create a custom view of the courses in your account by using the "pencil" icon.

Look for the pencil icon at the top-right corner of the My Courses list or in the Courses tab. Click the pencil to toggle the checkboxes to customize your view. If you want to display "hidden" courses again, use the pencil icon to bring them back. Make sure you uncheck the “Announcements” box, also, or those will still be there and not connected to their course.

Logging off of Blackboard

Did you know that if you just close your access to Blackboard by clicking that little "X”, that you are not logged off the system? This could have serious implications if you are on a public computer or someone else uses yours. Always click on "logout" to make you Blackboard account is protected.

Studying can be a very challenging. Not only do you have to find the time to study without distractions, but you also have to focus your mind to concentrate on the subject matter (coffee tends to help). Here are some helpful study tips when you are reading a textbook:

  • First, break the chapter down into an outline in your own words. Then, underline the most important elements.
  • Show the relationships each of the statements have to each other when arranging your notes.
  • If there’s a summary in your textbook at the end of a section, read it first, then keep the points that it emphasizes in mind as you read through the section from the beginning.
  • To reinforce your memory of the new vocabulary words in each chapter, try to incorporate them into your everyday conversations.
