‘CATS OPEN SEASON WITH SPLIT AT REBEL GAMES

KISSIMMEE, FL -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University opened the 2008 season with a split at the Rebel Spring Games. Wilmington knocked off the University of Mary in game one by a score of 5-2, and then were downed by Lewis University 13-0 in the nightcap.

Sophomore hurler Katie Turner (1-0) picked up the win in game one, scattering nine hits and giving up two runs (both earned) in the complete game victory. Junior catcher Kelly Schirmer was 2-for-2 with a pair of RBI, while sophomore third baseman Lindsay Watson scored two runs. Senior shortstop Nicole Hays added an inside-the-park home run for the Wildcats.

Wilmington was held to just one hit by senior outfielder Shustine Wilson in the nightcap, as they fell to Lewis University. Sophomore pitcher Kim Lawrence (0-1) took the loss, giving up 13 runs (10 earned) and 11 hits over five innings of work.

Following the games, Wilmington stands at 1-1 on the young season.

3/3/2008 – Rebel Spring Games

WILMINGTON TAKES A PAIR ON DAY TWO

KISSIMMEE, FL -- The Wilmington University Wildcats rebounded nicely from a defeat and answered back by taking two games on day two of action at the Rebel Games. The ‘Cats downed Stonehill College 6-3 in the opening game, and followed that with a 3-2 extra-innings win over Minnesota State-Moorhead in the game two.

Sophomore pitcher Katie Turner (2-0) picked up the win against Stonehill, as she went seven innings and surrendered just three hits and three runs (all earned), while striking out six. Sophomore second baseman Heather Bush was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs and a RBI, while classmate Lindsay Watson was also 2-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI.

Wilmington held off Minnesota State-Moorhead in the second game. With the score knotted at two, Lindsay Frye was placed on second base to start the eighth inning. After a sacrifice bunt by Kristin Tomlinson that moved Frye to third, Watson followed with a single to right that plated Frye. Turner came on in relief of Kim Lawrence in the eighth, and retired the side to record her first save of the season. Lawrence (1-1) went seven innings, giving up six hits and two runs (both earned) to pick up her first win of the year.

With the sweep, the Wildcats improved to 3-1 on the season.

3/4/2008 – Rebel Spring Games

WILDCATS SWEEP LEMOYNE AND NORTHWOOD

KISSIMMEE, FL -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University continued their hot start to the season, as they knocked off #22 ranked LeMoyne College 5-3 and downed Northwood University 10-0, in day three of action at the Rebel Games.

In the opening win over LeMoyne, freshman first baseman Nicci Gebhart was 2-for-3 with a run scored, while junior catcher Kelly Schirmer and senior shortstop Nicole Hays each added a RBI. Sophomore hurler Katie Turner (3-0) recorded the victory, going seven innings and giving up just three hits and three runs (all unearned) while striking out four.

Wilmington blanked Northwood 10-0 in the second game, as sophomore pitcher Kim Lawrence (2-1) threw a two-hit shutout. Hays was 2-for-3 with a double, triple, and three RBI, while sophomore second baseman Heather Bush was 2-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI. Classmate Lindsay Watson was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI and runs scored, including her first home run of the season.

With the wins, the Wildcats upped their record to 5-1 on their year.

WILMINGTON SPLITS AT REBEL GAMES

KISSIMMEE, FL -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University split a pair of games at the Rebel Spring Games. Wilmington defeated Lake Superior State University 5-2 in game one, and lost 1-0 to Gannon University in the second game.

Sophomore hurler Kim Lawrence (3-1) picked up the win in game one, as she scattered seven hits and two runs (both earned) over seven innings of work, while striking out five. Senior catcher Kelly Schirmer was 1-for-3 with a pair of RBI, while freshman first baseman Nicci Gebhart was 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Wilmington spoiled a great effort by sophomore pitcher Katie Turner (3-1) who gave up six hits and one run (unearned), while striking out six in six innings of work. The Wildcats recorded just six hits against Gannon, but left seven on base, including two innings with the bases loaded.

Following the games, Wilmington stands at 6-2 on the season.

WILMINGTON TAKES A PAIR FROM URBANA AND SAINT ROSE

KISSIMMEE, FL -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University swept two games today, as they knocked off Urbana University 4-1 and blanked the College of Saint Rose 5-0, in day five of action at the Rebel Games.

Sophomore pitcher Kim Lawrence (4-1) picked up the win in game one, giving up six hits and one run (unearned) in seven innings of work. Freshman first baseman Nicci Gebhart was 2-for-2 with a run scored and a pair of RBI. Senior shortstop Nicole Hays was 2-for-3 with a RBI and a stolen base.

The Wildcats blanked Saint Rose in the second game, behind a three-hit shutout from sophomore hurler Katie Turner (4-1). Hays went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs, while Gebhart was 2-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI. Freshman outfielder Kristin Tomlinson was 1-for-2 with a run scored and a pair of RBI.

With the wins, Wilmington improved to 8-2 on the season.

WILDCATS CLOSE OUT SPRING TRIP WITH SPLIT

KISSIMMEE, FL -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University split their final two games at the Rebel Spring Games. Wilmington lost to #17 ranked Minnesota State-Manakto 5-1 in the opening game, but rallied in the nightcap, downing the University of Findlay 4-1.

The Wildcat offense was silenced in the opening game, as Megan Teal of Minnesota State-Mankato no-hit Wilmington and recorded nine strikeouts. Sophomore Kim Lawrence (4-2) suffered the loss, giving up nine hits and five runs (four earned) in seven innings of work.

Wilmington rallied in game two, downing Findlay, 4-1 behind another victory from sophomore pitcher Katie Turner (5-1). Turner scattered six hits and one run (unearned) in the complete game win. Senior shortstop Nicole Hays was 4-for-4 with three runs batted in, while sophomore third baseman Lindsay Watson was 3-for-4 with three runs scored.

Following the games, Wilmington ended their spring trip with a 9-3 record. The Wildcats return to the diamond on Wednesday afternoon when they play host to the Rams of Philadelphia University in a CACC doubleheader beginning at 2:30 PM.

3/12/2008 – PHILADELPHIA UNIVERSITY

WILMINGTON TAKES TWO FROM PHILADELPHIA

NEW CASTLE, DE -- The Lady Wildcats of Wilmington University swept the visiting Rams of Philadelphia University, 2-1 and 4-1 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference softball action on Wednesday afternoon at Asbury Field.

In the opening game, Wilmington jumped out on the board in the first inning when sophomore second baseman Heather Bush’s RBI double to left center, plated Lindsay Watson. Bush later scored on a RBI double off the bat of freshman Nicci Gebhart. Philadelphia scored their lone run in the fourth, as a RBI double from Kristyn Loughery plated Maureen Keenan. The Rams threatened again in the top of the seventh, as they had runners at second and third with two outs, but the Wildcats induced a groundout to end the inning.

Sophomore hurler Katie Turner (6-1) picked up the win, surrendering six hits and one run (earned), while striking out eight in the complete game victory. Jacque Curtis pitched well for the Rams in the loss, giving up four hits and two runs in her six innings of work.

Wilmington completed the sweep, with a 4-1 victory in the nightcap. This time, it was the Rams who scored first, as they plated an unearned run in the top of the first. The Wildcats got on the board in the third inning, as a RBI double off the bat of junior catcher Kelly Schirmer plated Watson and Lindsay Frye. Wilmington added two more runs in the fourth when Frye’s RBI single plated Nicole Hays. Bush followed with a bases-loaded walk to score Cari Lindstrom.

Kim Lawrence (5-2) earned the victory, as the sophomore gave up five hits and one run (unearned), while striking out seven in seven innings. Kelly Rauco took the loss for Philadelphia, as she scattered six hits and four runs (all earned) during her six innings. Junior outfielder Lindsay Frye finished the game going 2-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI, while Kelly Schirmer was 1-for-3 with a pair of RBI.

With the sweep, the Wildcats improved to 2-0 in the CACC and 11-3 overall, while Philadelphia dropped to 0-2 in the conference and 0-2 on the season. Wilmington returns to action on Thursday evening when they travel to Columbia Union College to take on the Pioneers in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 6:00 PM.

3/13/2008 – Columbia Union College

WILMINGTON BREAKS OUT THE BATS IN SWEEP OF COLUMBIA UNION

TAKOMA PARK, MD -- The Lady Wildcats of Wilmington University used an offensive explosion to help sweep the host Pioneers of Columbia Union College in non-conference softball action on Thursday evening. Wilmington took game one by a score of 12-4, and closed out the sweep with an 11-1 victory in the nightcap.

The ‘Cats put up three runs in the top of the second inning of game one, on a RBI single by junior Lindsay Frye. Sophomore Heather Bush followed with a 2-RBI double. Columbia Union cut the deficit to one (3-2) on a pair of solo home runs in the third. Wilmington added two more in the top of the sixth as freshman Kristin Tomlinson delivered a 2-RBI single. The Pioneers answered right back in the bottom half of the frame, plating two of their own. The Wildcats blew the game open in the seventh, with the big blow coming as a two-run home run from freshman Nicci Gebhart, the first of her collegiate career. Wilmington would go on to plate seven that inning, and picked up the 12-4 victory.

Tomlinson finished the game, going 2-for3 with four RBI and two runs scored. Bush was 2-for-5 with 4 RBI, while Frye ended 2—for-4 with two RBI. Senior Shustine Wilson was 3-for-3 with three runs scored for Wilmington. Sophomore hurler Kim Lawrence (6-2) picked up the win, as she scattered six hits and two runs (both earned) through five innings of work. Classmate Katie Turner picked up her second save of the season in relief of Lawrence and freshman Kate Brown.

Wilmington kept up the offensive pressure in the second game, and easily cruised to the 11-1 victory. Columbia Union plated an unearned run in the bottom of the first, but that would be all they would get, as the ‘Cats continued to roll.

The Wildcats plated four runs in the top of the third, as Nicci Gebhart connected on a three-run shot, her second homer of the day. Senior Nicole Hays followed with a solo home run of her own, as Wilmington went back-to-back for the first time this season. The ‘Cats added another four runs in the fourth, with Frye delivering a 2-RBI single, and junior Kelly Schirmer notching a 2-run blast of her own. Wilmington closed out the scoring in the sixth, as Bush knocked a three-run shot over the left field fence.

Sophomore pitcher Katie Turner (7-1) picked up the win, giving up just two hits and one run (unearned), while striking out six in six innings of work. Lindsay Frye finished the game going 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI. Sophomore Lindsay Watson was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored, while Schirmer picked up two RBI and scored two runs.

With the wins, Wilmington improved to 13-3 on the season, while Columbia Union dropped to 2-6 overall. The Wildcats return to the diamond on Tuesday afternoon when they travel to take on the Golden Rams of West Chester University in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 2:30 PM.

3/18/2008 – West Chester University

WILDCATS SWEPT BY WEST CHESTER

WEST CHESTER, PA -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University were swept by the host Golden Rams of West Chester University in non-conference softball action on Tuesday afternoon. West Chester won game one by a score of 1-0, and completed the sweep with a 6-2 victory in the nightcap.

The Golden Rams scored game one’s lone run in the bottom of the first, and that would hold up, as they kept the Wildcats off the board. Wilmington did manage six hits, but could not get a runner across the plate. Sophomore hurler Katie Turner (7-2) suffered the loss, but threw very well in defeat. Turner allowed just five hits and struck out four in six innings of work.

Wilmington jumped on the board first to start the second game, as freshman Nicci Gebhart’s RBI single plated sophomore Heather Bush. Junior Kelly Schirmer later scored on a double steal when Gebhart swiped second. Schirmer came home on the throw and beat the tag applied by the West Chester catcher to put the ‘Cats up 2-0. The Golden Rams added a single run in the bottom of the first, but did their damage in the third inning. A grand slam with two outs proved to be the big blow and the hosts held on for the victory.

The Wildcats out-hit West Chester by a 13-5 margin, but again stranded too many runners on base. Sophomore Lindsay Watson was 3-for-4, while Gebhart also had three hits, and drove in one. Bush and Schirmer each went 2-for-4 with a run scored for Wilmington.

Kim Lawrence (6-3) suffered the loss for the ‘Cats, as the sophomore gave up five hits, six runs (five earned) and struck out five through six innings.

Following the games, Wilmington dropped to 13-5 on the season, while West Chester improved to 13-6 overall. The Wildcats return to the diamond on Saturday afternoon when they play host to the Deacons of Bloomfield College in a CACC doubleheader beginning at 1:00 PM at Asbury Field.

WILMINGTON TAKES TWO FROM BLOOMFIELD

NEW CASTLE, DE -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University swept the visiting Deacons of Bloomfield College in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference softball action on Saturday afternoon at Asbury Field. Wilmington blanked the Deacons 4-0 in the opening game, and closed out the sweep with a 6-4 victory in the night cap.

The ‘Cats wasted no time in getting on the board in game one, as sophomore Lindsay Watson led off the game with a double off the top of the centerfield fence. After a sacrifice that moved her to third, classmate Heather Bush reached on an error. Junior Kelly Schirmer followed with a walk, and freshman Nicci Gebhart cleared the bases with her first grand slam, a shot deep over the centerfield fence to put the Wildcats up 4-0. That score would stand, as neither team would score another run.

Sophomore hurler Katie Turner (8-3) picked up the win, her second shutout of the year, as she gave up four hits and struck out eight in seven innings of work. Watson finished the game 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Gebhart, senior Shustine Wilson, and freshman Kristin Tomlinson each had one hit.

Wilmington scored early in the second game, as Gebhart picked up an RBI on an infield groundout. Senior Nicole Hays had a RBI single that plated Bush to put the ‘Cats up 2-0 after one inning. The Wildcats scored two more in the third, as Hays roped a two-RBI double to left that scored Bush and Schirmer. Sophomore Katie Walsh had a RBI double in the bottom of the fifth that plated Schirmer and Wilson, and gave the ‘Cats a 6-0 lead after five. Bloomfield answered back with a single run in the sixth, and the Deacons scored three in the top of the seventh, but the Wildcat defense held on for the victory.

Sophomore pitcher Kim Lawrence (7-3) earned the victory, as she scattered eight hits and four runs (all earned) while striking out six in seven innings of work. Heather Bush and Kelly Schirmer each had two hits and scored twice, while Nicole Hays finished the game going 2-for-3 with three runs batted in.

With the wins, Wilmington improved to 4-0 in the CACC and 15-5 overall, while Bloomfield dropped to 0-2 in the conference and 5-11 on the season. The Wildcats return to the diamond on Tuesday afternoon when they travel to take on the Devils of the University of the Sciences in a CACC doubleheader beginning at 2:30 PM.

WILDCATS SPLIT WITH USP

PHILADELPHIA, PA -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University split with the host Devils of the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) softball action on Tuesday afternoon. Wilmington won the opening game by a score of 4-2, but fell in the nightcap by the same score.

In the opener, USP scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the first, but the Wildcats answered back in the second on a solo home run by senior Nicole Hays. Wilmington plated the go ahead run in the fifth, on a two-run homer by freshman Kristin Tomlinson, the first of her collegiate career. A RBI single by senior Kelly Schirmer plated sophomore Lindsay Watson for the game’s fourth run, and that would be all the Wildcats needed, as they held on to win 4-2.

Sophomore hurler Katie Turner (9-2) continued her dominance on the mound, giving up just three hits and two runs (both unearned) while striking out eight in seven innings of work. Gina Murray took the loss for USP, scattering five hits and three runs (all earned) over four innings of work.

Hays finished the game going 2-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI, while sophomore Jaime Hurlock also went 2-for-4 with a double. Classmate Lindsay Watson went 1-for-3 with a run scored, a walk, and a stolen base for the ‘Cats.

In the second game, Wilmington jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead, courtesy off a lead-off home run by Lindsay Watson, who went yard on the game’s first pitch. The Wildcats added another run in the second inning when Nicole Hays scored on a RBI single by Hurlock. The Devils answered back with an unearned run in the bottom of the inning, to cut the lead to 2-1, and then scored three runs (two earned) in the fifth to go ahead 4-2. That score would hold, as the Wildcats stranded seven runners on base.

Sophomore pitcher Kim Lawrence (7-4) suffered the loss, scattering seven hits and four runs (two earned) while striking out four in six innings or work. Erin Dengan earned the victory for USP, giving up six hits and two runs (all earned) in seven innings.

Wilmington was led by Hurlock, who went 2-for-3 with a RBI. Junior Lindsay Frye, sophomores Lindsay Watson and Heather Bush, along with Hays, each added a hit for the Wildcats.

Following the games, Wilmington stands at 5-1 in the CACC and 16-6 overall, while USP is now 3-1 in the conference and 5-9 on the season. The Wildcats return to the diamond on Saturday afternoon, when they travel to take on the Warriors of Nyack College in a CACC doubleheader beginning at 1:00 PM.

WILDCATS SWEEP NYACK

NYACK, NY -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University swept the host Warriors of Nyack College in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) softball action on Saturday afternoon at Hilltop Field. Wilmington won game one by a score of 7-3 and closed out the sweep with a 7-0 shutout victory in the nightcap.

Wilmington batted around in the top of the second and plated six runs in the inning to take the 6-0 lead. Junior Lindsay Frye and freshman Kristin Tomlinson each roped two-RBI doubles, while sophomore Lindsay Watson had a RBI double and classmate Heather Bush notched a sacrifice fly. The ‘Cats added one more in the fourth, when Bush singled home Watson to give the visitors a 7-0 lead. Nyack plated an unearned run in the bottom of the frame, and scored two more unearned runs in the sixth, but the Wildcats closed out the important conference victory.

Sophomore pitcher Katie Turner (10-2) picked up the win for Wilmington, as she gave up four hits and three runs (all unearned) while striking out seven in seven innings. Offensively, Watson finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI, while seniors Kelly Schirmer and Nicole Hays each added two hits.

The Wildcats received a stellar outing from sophomore hurler Kim Lawrence (8-4) in the second game. Lawrence threw a shutout, giving up only five hits while fanning a season-high eleven batters in seven innings of work.

Wilmington wasted little time getting on the board, as freshman Nicci Gebhart blasted a three-run home run in the top of the first. The ‘Cats added two more in the third, on a two-RBI double off the bat of senior Shustine Wilson. Kristin Tomlinson added a solo shot in the seventh, and Lindsay Watson later scored on a double steal to round out the scoring for the Wildcats.

Gebhart finished the game going 1-for-3 with two runs scored and thee RBIs. Sophomore catcher Jaime Hurlock added two hits, including a double, while Watson Wilson each roped a double.

With the wins, Wilmington improves to 7-1 in the CACC and 18-6 overall, while Nyack dropped to 0-4 in the conference and 4-10 on the season. The Wildcats return to the diamond on Sunday afternoon, when they play host to the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 1:00 PM.

WILMINGTON SPLITS WITH STAC

NEW CASTLE, DE -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University split with the visiting Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College in non-conference softball action on Sunday afternoon at Asbury Field. Wilmington won game one by a 5-2 score, but fell short in the nightcap, losing 3-1.

Wilmington got on the board in the bottom of the third inning, as sophomore Lindsay Watson blasted a solo home run. The ‘Cats added three more in the fourth, with the big blow coming as a two-run home run off the bat of freshman Nicci Gebhart. Classmate Kristin Tomlins later ripped a RBI single that scored senior Shustine Wilson to give the hosts a 4-0 lead. St. Thomas Aquinas scored a pair of unearned runs in the sixth to cut the lead to 4-2, but Wilmington added an insurance run in the bottom of the frame on another RBI single from Tomlinson.

Sophomore hurler Katie Turner (11-2) picked up the win, as she tossed a three hitter and gave up two runs (both unearned) while striking out eight in seven innings. Kristin Tomlinson finished the game going 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while sophomore Jaime Hurlock also had two hits, including a double, and scored a run.

The Spartans struck first in the second game, scoring all three of their runs in the first inning. A single with an error allowed the first run to score, and the following batter hit a two-run home run. Wilmington scored their lone run in the fifth, courtesy of an error by the visitors.

Kim Lawrence (8-5) suffered the loss, as the sophomore gave up just four hits and three runs (all earned) in seven innings of work. After the first inning, Lawrence gave up just one hit, and struck out eleven on the game. The Wildcat offense struggled in the second game, managing just five hits, and left seven runners on base.

Following the games, Wilmington stands at 19-7 overall, while St. Thomas Aquinas is 7-11 on the season. The Wildcats return to action on Wednesday afternoon when they play host to the Griffins of Chestnut Hill College in a CACC doubleheader beginning at 3:00 PM.

WILDCATS TAKE TWO FROM CHESTNUT HILL

NEW CASTLE, DE -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University received two strong outings from the pitching tandem of Katie Turner and Kim Lawrence, that propelled them to a split of the visiting Griffins of Chestnut Hill College in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference softball action on Wednesday afternoon at Asbury Field. Wilmington won game one by a score of 4-0 and closed out the sweep with a 9-1 victory in the nightcap.

The ‘Cats wasted little time in getting on the board, as sophomore Lindsay Watson led off the game with a double. She later stole home and scored on a fielder’s choice from classmate Heather Bush. Wilmington scored three more in the fifth, as a RBI double from Watson plated junior Lindsay Frye. Watson scored on a RBI single by senior Shustine Wilson, and Wilson later scored on a RBI single from Bush.

Sophomore pitcher Katie Turner (12-2) picked up her third shutout victory on the season, as she scattered five hits and struck out four in seven innings. Lindsay Watson finished the game going 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, two runs scored, and a RBI. Heather Bush was 1-for-3 with a pair of RBIs, while Shustine Wilson was 1-fo-3 with a RBI and a run scored.

In the second game, Wilmington again scored a run in the bottom of the first, this time it was freshman Nicci Gebhart driving in Bush. Chestnut Hill added an unearned run in the top of the second, but the Wildcats answered right back with two more in the bottom of the frame. Senior Kelly Schirmer had a triple to right field, and later scored on a RBI from Frye. Frye came home on a RBI from Watson. Wilmington scored three in the third with two runs coming in on a triple by senior Nicole Hays. Hays later crossed home on an error, making the score 7-1. The Wildcats added a single run in both the fourth and the fifth, and the game ended with a 9-1 score in the fifth inning.

Sophomore hurler Kim Lawrence (9-5) threw a very strong five innings, giving up just one hit and one run (unearned), while striking out 10 Griffins on the afternoon. Kelly Schirmer finished the game going 3-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI, while Heather Bush was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored. Nicole Hays was 1-for-3 with a run scored and two RBIs for the Wildcats.

WILMINGTON SPLITS WITH SHEPHERD

NEW CASTLE, DE -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University split with the visiting Rams of Shepherd University in non-conference softball action on Thursday afternoon at Asbury Field. Wilmington rallied for a 6-5 walk-off win in the opener, but fell short, dropping the nightcap by a 7-6 score.

Wilmington wasted little time in getting on the board, as sophomore Lindsay Watson started off the bottom of the first with a double. After being sacrificed over to third, she later scored on a RBI double from freshman Nicci Gebhart. Shepherd added two unearned runs in the top of the third, but the Wildcats answered back with two of their own in the bottom of the frame. Senior Shustine Wilson led off the inning with a single, and was advanced to second on a sacrifice by sophomore Heather Bush. She later scored on another RBI double by Gebhart. Gebhart came home on a RBI single from senior Nicole Hays, making the score 3-2 in favor of the hosts. Wilmington added a single run in the fifth, when Gebhart scored on a RBI double by sophomore Jaime Hurlock, but the Rams plated two runs in the sixth tying the game at four. Shepherd scored the go-ahead run in the seventh, but Wilmington had a little magic left in store in their last at-bat. Gebhart was intentionally walked to start the inning, and scored on a RBI double by Hays. Junior Kelly Schirmer moved Hays to third on a single, which left the Wildcats with runners on first and third with one out and the game tied at five. Schirmer stole second and on the throw, Hays bolted for home and slid in safely with the winning run.

Sophomore pitcher Katie Turner (13-2) picked up the win, giving up 13 hits and five runs (two earned), while striking out five in seven innings. Nicci Gebhart had a huge day at the plate, going 3-for-3 with three runs scored and a pair of RBIs. Nicole Hays was 2-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI, while Lindsay Watson and Kelly Schirmer each went 2-for-4.

The Wildcats scored first in the second game, when another RBI double from Gebhart plated Shustine Wilson, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead after the first inning. A solo home run in the second, by Nicole Hays put the ‘Cats up 2-0, but the Rams offense got going in the third as they scored six runs. Wilmington began chipping away, cutting the lead to 6-5 when they plated three in the fifth. Heather Bush, freshman Kristin Tomlinson, and Hays each drove in a run. Shepherd added another run in the seventh, giving them a 7-5 lead, but again the Wildcats would go down fighting. Cari Lindstrom, pinch running for Tomlinson, scored on a hard hit ball by Jaime Hurlock, cutting the deficit to just one, but the Rams would get out of the inning as the ‘Cats stranded runners on second and third to end the game.

Kim Lawrence (9-6) suffered the loss, scattering nine hits and seven runs (five earned) while striking out five in seven innings of work, Nicole Hays finished the game going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Heather Bush and Lindsay Watson each added two hits.

Following the games, Wilmington stands at 22-8 on the season, while Shepherd is 11-15 overall. The Wildcats return to action on Sunday afternoon, when they host the Lions of Molloy College in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 2:00 PM.

‘CATS DROP A PAIR TO PHIALDELPHIA

NEW CASTLE, DE -- The Lady Wildcats of Wilmington University fell in both ends of a non-conference doubleheader to the host Rams of Philadelphia University on Tuesday afternoon. Wilmington lost the opening game 9-8 in eight innings, and fell 2-0 in the nightcap.

It was a slugfest in the opening game and Wilmington started out quickly, scoring five runs over the first three innings. Philadelphia responded with three home runs over the three frames, but the Wildcats held an 8-6 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh. A costly error allowed the Rams to tie the game, and the hosts ended up scoring the winning run in the eighth on another Wildcat miscue.

Sophomore Kim Lawrence (9-7) suffered the loss, as she came in relief of classmate Katie Turner. Turner went 5.1 innings and allowed six hits and six runs (all earned) while striking out six. Lawrence surrendered two hits and three runs (all unearned). For the game, senior Nicole Hays, went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs. Sophomore Jaime Hurlock was 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored, while freshman Nicci Gebhart added two hits and two runs scored.

The Wildcat offense struggled in the second game, which was a pitcher’s duel. Wilmington’s Lawrence held the Rams to just four hits, but the one big blow was a two-out, two-run home run in the fourth. The Wildcats only mustered five hits of their own, and could not cross the plate.

Lawrence (9-8) took the loss, but pitched very well in defeat, allowing just those four hits. Senior Kelly Schirmer and sophomore Heather Bush each had two hits for Wilmington, including a double.

Following the games, Wilmington now stands at 22-10 on the season, while Philadelphia improves to 7-15 overall. The Wildcats return to action on Friday afternoon, when they travel to take on the Eagles of Post University in a CACC doubleheader beginning at 1:30 PM.

WILMINGTON SWEEPS POST

WATERBURY, CT -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University received two stellar outings from the sophomore pitching tandem of Katie Turner and Kim Lawrence, in a sweep of the host Eagles of Post University in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) softball action on Friday afternoon. Wilmington won game one by a 3-1 score, and closed out the sweep with a 2-1 nine-inning win in the nightcap.

The opening game was a pitcher’s duel between Turner and Post’s Caitlin McAveney. Wilmington finally broke through in the fourth inning, as senior Nicole Hays knocked home sophomore Heather Bush. Post tied it in the bottom of the inning, scoring an unearned run. The Wildcats added the go-ahead run in the fifth, as sophomore Lindsay Watson reached on an error and junior Lindsay Frye came around to score. Hays homered to left in the sixth inning, giving the ‘Cats an insurance run, and the visitors would hold on for the 3-1 win.

Katie Turner (14-2) picked up the win, as the sophomore gave up just three hits and one run (unearned) while striking out five in seven innings of work. Nicole Hays had two of the Wildcats three hits for the game, and also stole two bases. Heather Bush was 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored for Wilmington.

Wilmington needed extra innings to close out the victory in game two. The Wildcats scored a single run in the fifth inning, as senior Shustine Wilson laid down a squeeze bunt base hit on the first base line that plated junior Lindsay Frye. Post would tie the game at one in the bottom of the seventh, on a two-out error by the Wildcats. After a scoreless eighth, Nicole Hays went to second base courtesy of the international tie breaker to start the ninth. She was sacrificed over to third by junior Kelly Schirmer, and scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball by the Post catcher. Pitcher Katie Turner came in relief of sophomore Kim Lawrence in the bottom of the ninth, and picked up her third save of the season, as she struck out the side to end the game.

Lawrence (10-8) earned the victory, as she scattered eight hits and one run (unearned) over eight innings of work. Lindsay Watson and freshman Kristin Tomlinson each had two hits for the Wildcats.

With the wins, Wilmington improved to 11-1 in the CACC and 24-10 overall, while Post dropped to 3-11 in the conference and 12-18 on the season. The Wildcats return to action on Tuesday afternoon, when they travel to take on the league-leading Lions of Georgian Court University in a CACC doubleheader beginning at 3:00 PM.

GEORGIAN COURT RALLIES TO TAKE TWO FROM WILMINGTON

LAKEWOOD, NJ -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University dropped two heartbreaking losses to the host Lions of Georgian Court University in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference softball action on Tuesday afternoon. Wilmington dropped the first game by a score of 8-7, and fell 5-4 in the nightcap.

Wilmington scored four runs in the third inning, with the big blow coming as a 2-RBI single from senior Nicole Hays. The Wildcats added another run in the fourth, and two in the sixth, on a two-run shot from freshman Kristin Tomlinson, giving the ‘Cats a 7-0 lead. Georgian Court scored a pair in the bottom of the inning, and completed an improbable comeback by plating six in the bottom of the inning.

Sophomore hurler Katie Turner (14-3) suffered the loss, giving up seven hits and eight runs (five earned) over six and two-thirds innings. Turner held the league-leading Lions to just one hit through five innings, keeping them off-balance with an assortment of pitches. Junior Kelly Schirmer finished the game going 3-for-3 with two RBIs, while Hays was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and runs scored. Sophomore Lindsay Watson added two singles, while Tomlinson was 2-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs.

The second game was a back-and-forth affair. Georgian Court scored a single run in the top of the first, and added two in the second, but the Wildcats rallied and plated three in the third. The Lions then scored another run on a solo homerun in the fourth, but Wilmington responded again plating a run in the sixth. With the game tied at four going into the bottom of the seventh, Georgian Court scored the winning run with two outs, on an attempted pick off play.

Sophomore pitcher Kim Lawrence (10-9) took the loss, giving up seven hits and five runs (all earned) in six and two-thirds innings. She struck out seven on the day. Lindsay Watson was 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored, while Kelly Schirmer was 1-for-2 with a run scored and a double for Wilmington.

Following the games, Wilmington dropped to 11-3 in the CACC and 24-12 overall, while Georgian Court improved to 15-0 in the conference and 28-8 on the season. The Wildcats return tomorrow afternoon, when they travle to take on the Tigers of Holy Family University in a CACC doubleheader beginning at 3:00 PM.

PHILADELPHIA, PA -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University split with the host Tigers of Holy Family University in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) softball action on Wednesday afternoon. Wilmington took game one by a 3-1 score, but fell 2-1 in the nightcap.

In the opener, Wilmington plated two runs in the fourth inning, on a two-run homerun by junior Kelly Schirmer. The Wildcats scored another run in the sixth, as sophomore Jaime Hurlock singled home senior Nicole Hays to put the visitors up 3-0. Holy Family answered back with a run of their own in the bottom of the frame, but that would be all they would get, as Wilmington held on for the 3-1 victory.

WILMINGTON RALLIES TO EARN SPLIT WITH CALDWELL

NEW CASTLE, DE -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University earned a much needed split with the visiting Cougars of Caldwell College in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) softball action on Saturday afternoon at Asbury Field. Wilmington fell 1-0 in eight innings in the opener, but won the nightcap by a score of 7-5 to garner the split.

It was a pitcher’s duel during the first game, as Wilmington’s Katie Turner and Caldwell’s Brittany Pulido held the opposing offenses scoreless through regulation. In the top of the eighth, the Cougars’ Nicole Bodrog led off the inning with a single and advance to second on a Wildcat miscue. She came around to score on a RBI single by Gina Capardi to give Caldwell a 1-0 lead. Wilmington had the tying run on base in the bottom of the inning, but Pulido induced a groundout to end the threat and the game.

Turner (15-4) suffered the hard-luck loss, as she gave up five hits and the one run (unearned), while striking out six. It was the sophomore’s third 1-0 loss on the season. Pulido earned the win, scattering four hits over eight innings of work.

Junior Kelly Schirmer had a double, while senior Shustine Wilson, sophomore Lindsay Watson, and freshman Kristin Tomlinson each had singles for the Wildcats.

Wilmington jumped on the board in the first inning, as senior Nicole Hays connected on a three-run home run to deep centerfield. The ‘Cats added another in the fourth, as a RBI double from freshman Nicci Gebhart plated sophomore Heather Bush, who reached on a single. Caldwell added a single run in both the fourth and fifth to cut the lead to 4-2, but the Wildcats put a three spot up in the fifth. Wilson scored on a Caldwell error, and Hays laced a two-run homer, her second of the game, to give the hosts a 7-2 lead. Caldwell cut the lead to 7-5 on a three-run homerun by Gina Capardi, but Katie Turner, came on to end the threat in the sixth and seventh innings.

Sophomore pitcher Kim Lawrence (11-10) picked up the win, scattering six hits and five runs (all earned) over five and two-thirds innings of work. Turner picked up her fourth save of the season, throwing a scoreless inning and one-third. Pulido suffered the loss, giving up five hits and four runs (one earned) over four innings.

Nicole Hays finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs scored and five RBIs, while Nicci Gebhart was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and a pair of RBIs. Junior Lindsay Frye added two singles, while Schirmer also had two hits, including a double.

Following the games, Wilmington stands at 13-5 in the conference and 26-14 overall, while Caldwell is 12-4 in the CACC and 22-18 on the season. The Wildcats return to action on Thursday afternoon, when they play host to the cross-town rival Lightning of Goldey-Beacom College in a CACC doubleheader beginning at 3:00 PM.

WILDCATS TAKE TWO FROM GOLDEY-BEACOM BEHIND LAWRENCE’S PERFECT GAME

NEW CASTLE, DE -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University swept the visiting Lightning of Goldey-Beacom College in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) softball action on Thursday afternoon at Asbury Field. Wilmington won the first game 6-4, and completed the sweep with an 8-0 blanking in the nightcap.

The story of the day was sophomore pitcher Kim Lawrence who threw a perfect game in the second game of the twin-bill. In the five-inning, mercy shortened game, Lawrence (12-10) faced the minimum number of batters, and struck out eight as she earned her first collegiate no-hitter.

In that second game, Wilmington wasted little time scoring, as three Wildcats crossed the plate in the first inning. The ‘Cats added three more in the third, and scored two in the fifth, when a walk-off double from junior Kelly Schirmer ended the game.

Senior shortstop Nicole Hays was 3-for-3 with three runs scored, two RBIs, and two stolen bases. Sophomore second baseman Heather Bush was 2-for-2 with three runs scored, three stolen bases, and one RBI. Senior Shustine Wilson, sophomore Katie Walsh, and Schirmer all added hits for the Wildcats.

Goldey-Beacom struck first in the opening, game, plating a run in the top of the first. Wilmington answered right back in the bottom of the frame, as Hays and Schirmer each roped RBI singles. The Lightning added two more in the third to take a 3-2 lead, but Wilmington added three runs in the fourth to go ahead 5-3. Goldey-Beacom scored one more in the fifth, but the Wildcats added one of their own in the bottom of the inning. With a 6-4 lead, Lawrence threw a scoreless seventh inning to earn her first save of the year.

Sophomore Katie Turner (16-4) picked up the win, scattering ten hits and four runs (three earned) while striking out six over six innings of work. Nicole Hays was 3-for-3 with three runs scored and a RBI, while Kelly Schirmer was also 3-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored. Freshman outfielder Kristin Tomlinson was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while junior outfielder Lindsay Frye was 2-for-3 with a double.

With the wins, Wilmington improved to 15-5 in the CACC and 28-14 overall, while Goldey-Beacom dropped to 2-20 in the conference and 7-28 on the season. The Wildcats clinch a berth in the upcoming CACC playoffs to be held next week at Caldwell College. Wilmington returns to the diamond on Saturday afternoon in their final home game of the season, as they take on the Golden Falcons of Felician College in a CACC doubleheader beginning at 1:00 PM.

4/26/2008 – FELICIAN COLLEGE (Senior Day)

WILMINGTON SPLITS WITH FELICIAN

NEW CASTLE, DE -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University split with the visiting Golden Falcons of Felician College in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference softball action at Asbury Field. Felician won game one 2-0, and Wilmington won game two by the same score.

The Golden Falcons got all they would need in the top of the first as Samantha Ortiz laced a two-out, two-run homer to put the visitors up 2-0. Felician’s Nicole Broecker earned the win, scattering just four hits in the shutout.

Sophomore Katie Turner (16-5) suffered the loss, giving up seven hits and two runs (all earned) over seven innings. Freshman Nicci Gebhart was 2-for-3 while sophomore Lindsay Watson had a double for the Wildcats.

Wilmington opened the second game, plating a run in the bottom of the first after a bunt single by sophomore Heather Bush and aggressive base running by senior Shustine Wilson. The ‘Cats added another run in the second, after sophomore Jaime Hurlock led off the inning with a double, and came home on a RBI single by Wilson. That would be all the Wildcats would need, as the held on for the 2-0 win.

Kim Lawrence (13-10) continued her dominance on the mound, as the sophomore gave up just one hit and struck out six, in her second consecutive shutout. Shustine Wilson was 3-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI, while senior Nicole Hays, Hurlock, and Bush all added hits for the Wildcats.

Following the games, Wilmington stands at 16-6 in the CACC and 29-15 on the season, while Felician is 9-12 in the conference and 14-22 overall. The Wildcats return to action on Sunday afternoon when they travel to take on the Chargers of Dominican College in the final regular season conference doubleheader of the year.

4/27/2008 – Dominican College

WILDCATS DROP TWO TO DOMINICAN

ORANGEBURG, NY -- The Wildcats of Wilmington University dropped two games to the host Chargers of Dominican College in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) softball action on Sunday afternoon. Dominican won game one by a 10-8 score in eight innings, and completed the sweep with a 6-5 walk-off win the nightcap.

In the opening game, the Lady Chargers took a 2-0 lead in the third on a two run single to the right field line to score seniors Kristine Knuth and Jackie Terpstra ,who had doubled to left center.

The Wildcats answered back with a four run fifth inning to take a 4-2 lead. Jaime Hurlock had an infield RBI single, followed by a two run double down the right field line by junior Lindsay Frye. A single up the middle by Lindsay Watson plated Frye.

Dominican answered back to regain the lead with a three run fifth inning on a two run single through the left side by Cara Piasecki. Nicole Philpot, who pinch ran for Piasecki, came in to score on a WU error to give Dominican a 5-4 lead. The Lady Chargers also scored three runs in the sixth on a RBI single by Knuth and two run double to centerfield by Piasecki to extend the lead to 8-4.

WU tied the game with a four run seventh inning as Hurlock delivered an RBI single through the left side, Heather Bush had a two run double to right center and Nicole Hays followed with an RBI single up the middle to knot the game at 8-8.

In the bottom of the eighth with one on and one out, Knuth hit a two run blast over the fence in right center to lift DC to the 10-8 victory.

Senior hurler Christine Stathes got the win (14-12) allowing four runs on four hits in five innings. Wildcat reliever Katie Turner (16-6) took the loss in 3 1/3 innings of work allowing six runs (two earned) on five hits and four strikeouts.

The night cap was an offensive battle as both teams shelled out 11 hits. DC took a 2-0 lead after two innings with an RBI single to center by catcher Nicole Scarillo in the first and an RBI single through the right side by Terpstra.

Wilmington got a run back in the third on the RBI single to left field by Hays to cut the lead to 2-1. The Lady Chargers scored two runs in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead on the two run homer to left field by Stathes.

The Wildcats tied the game at 4-4 in the sixth, scoring three runs on the home run to left center by Hurlock. WU took a 5-4 lead in the seventh on the single up the middle by Kelly Schirmer to score Bush who had led off the inning with a double to center.

In the bottom of the seventh, Stathes drew a one out walk. Kristi Dillon came in to run for Stathes and stole second and third base. Esgro hit the game winning RBI single down the left field line to give DC the 6-5 victory.

Stathes got the complete game victory (16-12), allowing five runs on 11 hits. Turner (16-7) took the loss in 1/3 innings of relief, allowing one run on one hit.

Following the game, Wilmington ended the regular season with a 17-7 confernce record and a 29-17 mark overall. Dominican improved to 18-6 in the CACC and 24-22 on the season. The Wildcats return to action on Thursday afternoon when they travel to the CACC Playoffs. Fifth seeded Wilmington will take on the fourth seeded Tigers of Holy Family University in a first-round game at 12:00 PM at Caldwell College.
