SUBJECT: Bats Come Alive For No. 19 Wilmington Baseball in 6-0 and 14-0 Sweep over Chestnut Hill
The bats came alive for the Wilmington University baseball team as it collected 26 hits in a doubleheader sweep over Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference foe Chestnut Hill, 6-0 and 14-0, on Wednesday afternoon at Wilson Field.
The Wildcats (16-4-1, 6-2 CACC) picked up eight hits in the opener while riding the arm of junior Rob Gore to a shutout victory before the Wildcats banged around 18 hits in the nightcap against Chestnut Hill (7-9, 4-2 CACC).
Sophomore Mike Annone put the Wildcats on the board in the bottom of the first inning, hitting a two-out single down the right field line to score Josh Swirchak in the opener.
Juniors Sam Goines and Jamie Treml added RBI singles in the third inning, giving more than enough support for Gore on the mound. Gore didn’t allow a hit until two outs in the fourth inning and only allowed one more base knock in his seven innings of work.
Senior Nick Marics pitched a scoreless eighth inning before freshman Jake Wersinger struck out the side in the ninth to give the Wildcats the 6-0 lead and snap the Griffins’ six-game winning streak.
Gore went seven strong innings, striking out a season high nine batters while only allowing one walk and two base hits. He is now 3-0 on the season.
The strong pitching continued in the nightcap, as the bats backed up the pitching of Treml, Jay Kluka, and Chris Lopez, securing another shutout for the Wildcats.
Treml went the first five innings, striking our five batters while only allowing one walk and three base hits. Kluka came on in the sixth inning and went three strong innings, striking out two more while only allowing three hits. Lopez shut the door for the second straight shutout, pitching a scoreless ninth inning.
The bottom of the first was all the Wildcats needed to get Treml his fifth win of the season, as the Wildcats started fast with four runs in the first inning. Mike Jerminski started his 4-for-5 game with an RBI single to center to start the scoring for the Wildcats. Joe Marciano added an RBI single before the Wildcats tallied two more unearned runs to make it 4-0 after one complete inning.
Goines tacked on another run in the bottom of the third, hitting an RBI double to left center with two outs, scoring Marciano from second.
After Treml worked through a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the fourth, the Wildcats put the game out of reach with another four-run inning, posting four runs on five hits in the bottom of the fourth. Swirchak got the scoring started with a single through the left side, scoring Jon Castro. Jerminski hit the first of his two doubles on the afternoon for two more RBIs before Tyler Hawthorne added an RBI single with two outs in the inning.
JR Gregory and Christian Adorno added doubles in the eighth inning while Jerminski added yet another RBI single to his afternoon. Marciano added a two-run double down the right field line while Goines capped the five-run eighth with a two run single to left.
Jerminski led the team with four RBI and three runs scored while Marciano batted 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored. Goines went 2-for-4 with four RBI while Castro and Swirchak added two hits apiece in the 18 hit outburst.
The Wildcats remain in CACC action this week, as they head to Felician on Friday for another weekday doubleheader. Game one of the conference twinbill is set for 1 p.m.
