Wilmington University Student Crowned Mrs. Delaware

Wilmington University graduate student Christine Rich has been crowned Mrs. Delaware and will compete for the title of Mrs. America in August of 2013.

Christine, 25, is pursuing her master’s degree in elementary education, in addition to raising a 2-year-old boy with her husband and working for the Baltimore Ravens as a playmaker, interacting with fans during home games.

It’s the third time Christine has competed in the annual Mrs. Delaware pageant, held this year in Rehoboth Beach on November 3. This time, she said, “The goal was to have fun and be 100 percent myself. I went in and wanted the judges to see me. Sometimes contestants get so absorbed with what judges want that they forget to be real.”

Mrs. Delaware contestants are scored on four components: interview, evening gown, swimsuit, and beauty and poise. Christine especially enjoyed the interview section because she was able to show her intellect and discuss her platform.

Christine’s platform is promoting the education and early detection of skin cancer. She had a basal cell carcinoma tumor for more than 10 years before it was diagnosed, and underwent reconstructive surgery only months before her first pageant.

“If I can save one life from skin cancer or help someone affected with the disease, I would be satisfied,” Christine said.

Christine, a Newark native who currently lives in Dover, said she chose Wilmington University because the small class sizes and personal interactions fit her lifestyle. “I’ve always had a passion for mentoring children,” said Rich, who begins her student teaching next fall.

The Mrs. America Pageant, in conjunction with the Mrs. World Pageant, one of the most highly viewed pageants in the world.

With everything Christine has accomplished, she maintains a realistic point of view. “I am successful now. I don’t need my master’s or to win Mrs. America. Success is being fulfilled with yourself and happy with your life. I am lucky to have a loving husband and a beautiful 2-year-old son and more success to come.”
