Wilmington University and Delmar School District Partner with Early College Credit Program

Eligible students can graduate with a diploma in one hand and college credits in another.

Wilmington, Delaware – April 25, 2013 – A new partnership between Wilmington University and Delmar School District will allow high school juniors and seniors to obtain high school and college credit simultaneously.

Starting in the fall of 2013, eligible high school students can enroll in Wilmington University through the Early College Program and attend classes taught by Wilmington University adjunct professors in Delmar High School classrooms. Each instructor is also a Delmar High School teacher.

Three Wilmington University courses will be offered through the program this fall at Delmar High School: English 101, Science 232, and Math 310. Additional courses will be added each subsequent academic year.

The district invited community members, students, public officials, media, and other guests to a formal announcement of the partnership at the district’s Media Center on Tuesday, April 23.

State Representative Tim Dukes attended the formal partnership signing and ceremony and observed that the partnership will provide students with a competitive edge in the global economy. He called the partnership “a launching pad" for Delmar students.

Also in attendance at the signing was Michael Watson, Chief Academic Officer for the Delaware Department of Education.“This is the type of rigorous opportunity students need to excel in today's academics. It will only help them going forward in their respective career choices,” he said.

Dr. Peter Bailey, Wilmington University’s Vice President for External Affairs, and Dr. Jim Wilson, Vice President of Academic Affairs, were equally impressed with the Delmar community. "We are as committed to this program launch as Delmar, the community and our state," said Dr. Bailey.

"Wilmington University is proud to have Delmar as our in-state partner," Dr. Wilson commented. "The University is all about providing opportunity for advanced learning at the high school level and we know there are many Delmar students who will benefit from it."
