Wilmington University Team Will Participate in Bike to the Bay

150-mile Bike Ride To Help Fund Multiple Sclerosis Research

About 20 Wilmington University staff, faculty, students, family and friends will participate in the annual Bike MS on Saturday, September 21, through Sunday, September 22, 2013.

The event will begin at 8 a.m. at Delaware Technical Community College Terry Campus, 100 Campus Drive, Dover, Delaware. Registration fees are $55 now through the day of the event, and there is a fundraising minimum of $300 for those who wish to participate.

The two-day cycling adventure follows a 150-mile course from Dover to Rehoboth Beach and back again. The ride is fully supported with catered rest stops, full meals, bike mechanics and support from local businesses. Music, free massages, great food and fun await the cyclists at the finish line.

The event raises funds and awareness for Multiple Sclerosis (MS), a chronic disease that attacks the neurological system. Symptoms can include numbness in the limbs and torso, paralysis, vision loss, fatigue and pain.

There is no cure for MS, but new research is being done every day to try to slow down the onset and progression of the disease. MS affects more than 400,000 Americans each year.

“I am delighted that we have a team of Wilmington University employees who want to participate in the MS Bike to the Bay event,” said team captain Eileen Donnelly, Assistant Vice President of Technology and Dean of the College of Online and Experiential Learning at Wilmington University. “We have been training hard for this event and look forward to showing our support. “We know that we can go on to help people who have been diagnosed with MS and their families.”

All funds raised during this event will go to the Delaware Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. The Wilmington University team has raised more than $3,000 so far but is sure to raise more before the event is over.
