National Distance Learning Week at Wilmington University Goes ‘Behind the Curtain’

When 33 percent of Wilmington University’s student body uses online learning to pursue their college education, that’s something to celebrate.

In recognition of National Distance Learning Week 2013, which was held November 11 through 15, the University held several activities under the theme of “Behind the Curtain of Online Learning.” The week focused on generating awareness and appreciation for distance learning.

Online students submitted photos and videos featuring what they liked most about online learning at Wilmington University. Faculty went hunting in an online scavenger hunt that tested their knowledge of Blackboard tools and techniques. The University community was invited to preview a presentation to learn more about the experience of online learning.

Through these efforts, Wilmington University highlighted the outstanding achievements of its online students and faculty.

“The activities and information WilmU presented gave students, faculty, and the community a better understanding of online learning, from course development through enrollment,” said Dr. Sallie Reissman, Senior Director of Online Learning and Educational Technology.

Online learning now accounts for 33 percent of the total seats at Wilmington University. Over 3,500 students took 100 percent of their coursework online. These students took classes via more than 60 online programs, including graduate, undergraduate, minors, and certificate programs.

The Online Learning Team collaborated with Academic Affairs to develop 92 online courses this year for a total of 607 available courses. Additionally, 75 courses were redeveloped as part of the ongoing process to ensure Wilmington University online courses contain the latest technological and pedagogical enhancements.
