Meet Leading Author Dr. James VanSciver November 21 at Wilmington University Rehoboth Outreach Center

Former educator bridges gap in public education between theory and practice in his latest book, "Generalities of Distinction."

The Wilmington University Rehoboth Outreach Center will host author James VanSciver at the Center for a book signing of his newest book, Generalities of Distinction on Saturday, November 21, from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. at 41 Rehoboth Avenue in Rehoboth Beach.

VanSciver grew up on Rt. 24 just west of Lewes raising chickens on a local farm and working as a water man. He went on to spend the next 45 years as a teacher, principal, director, superintendent and college professor. He has published over 130 articles dealing with diverse education topics and has made more than 130 presentations at state and national conferences and conventions about education issues.

Generalities of Distinction, bridges the gap between theory and practice in public education with many examples coming from the Delmarva Peninsula. His unique experiences have shaped his perspectives on topics such as accountability, the achievement gap, ethics, special education and politics.

“The school experience is universal; everyone has an opinion about public education,” said VanSciver. “Yet so many of those who offer suggestions, create policy and otherwise cause changes in the local school house have not been in a position to be limited, hampered or criticized for those actions.”

“The reviews for this book have been tremendous," said Washington Post education reporter, columnist and author Jay Mathews. “This dedicated educator has a keen sense of how to raise achievement without killing curiosity.”
