Goldey-Beacom’s Late First Half Run Hands Wildcats 84-53 CACC Women’s Basketball Loss

Looking to make it the second straight clean basketball sweep at the WU Athletics Complex in as many attempts, the Wilmington University women’s basketball team was stopped short by its cross-town rivals Goldey-Beacom, 84-53, on Monday night in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action.
Freshman Tenicia Spence hit a jumper with 13:20 remaining in the first half to give the Wildcats (2-10, 1-4 CACC) a 15-13 lead, but the Lightning (7-5, 4-1 CACC) responded with a three-pointer on their next possession to take the lead for the rest of the game, earning their fourth victory in a row.
The Wildcats were hanging tough for a bulk of the first half, as they stayed within a five-point deficit for the next eight minutes. But after a Tashea Plummer lay-in cut the lead to two at 25-23, the Lightning used a 16-5 run over the final 6:25 of the first half to jump to a 13 point halftime lead.
Wilmington came out of the halftime break looking to get back into the contest, and quickly cut the deficit to 10 points with a three-pointer from Danielle Thomas. On the Wildcats next possession, Thomas sank a pair of free throws to make it a 43-35 game with 18:20 remaining in regulation.
After Taylor Carter grabbed a defensive rebound to keep the Lightning off the board once again, Lauren Brown went to the charity stripe looking to make it a six point game with plenty of time on the scoreboard. But the junior missed both free throws and Goldey-Beacom went on an ensuing 9-0 run to extending the lead back out to 52-35 before the home team could get on the board again.
The Wildcats could not recover from the 9-0 blow, as the Lightning continue to extend the lead for the rest of the half and took its biggest lead at 80-48 on a three-pointer by Taylor Leonard with 1:52 to play.
Thomas, a senior from Toms River, N.J., led a trio of Wildcat in double figures with 14. She went 5-for-14 from the floor which includes a 2-for-8 performance from beyond the three-point arc. Spence finished with 11 points while Brown added 10 points, five rebounds and three assists. Plummer finished with a team high 10 rebounds, chipping in with six points on 3-for-5 shooting.
The Lightning’s Devonne Richardson tallied her third consecutive double-double with a game high 22 points and 13 rebounds. She went 6-for-10 from the floor, including hitting all three of her three-point attempts and a near perfect effort, 7-for-8, from the foul line. Irene Hudson added 14 points for the visitors while Akilah Sewell chipped in with 13 off the bench.
The Wildcats shot 29.7 percent from the floor and was nearly doubled up on the boards, getting outrebounded 60-32 for the game. The Lightning shot 45.1 percent from the floor but went 6-for-12 from three-point land compared to the Wildcats’ 3-for-21.
Wilmington will look to get back to its winning ways in December, playing its second of four straight home games on Thursday. The team will face Division III Lancaster Bible at the WU Athletics Center, scheduled for a 6 p.m. tip.
