WilmU Team Spreads Good Cheer at National Championship

Cheerleaders set to compete in prestigious UCA competition.

The Wilmington University cheerleaders have much to cheer about.

The team will defend it's national champion title in Orlando, Fla., as they compete in the 2013 Universal Cheerleading Association (UCA) College Cheerleading Small Coed Division II National Championship. Before they go, they will show their WilmU spirit at a University-hosted send-off at the new Athletic Complex on Route 40 in Bear, Delaware.

This will be the team’s last opportunity to perform their routine before heading to Florida. The championship is January 18-20 at the Walt Disney World Resort.

In addition to the UCA team competition, the cheerleaders also qualified for the UCA Partner Stunt National Championships. Three partner stunt groups within the cheerleading team – including two pairs and one quartet – will compete for a title.

“The talent and experience possessed by this team will definitely lead them in the right direction for the coming years,” said Jeff Martino, the team’s head coach.

The UCA National Championship bills itself as the most prestigious college cheerleading championship in the country. More information about the competition can be found at http://www.uca.varsity.com/college_nationals.aspx.

In addition to their preparation for UCA nationals, the cheerleading team’s primary goal is supporting the men’s and women’s basketball teams at the University. The team is led by graduate student captains,Brad Gilbert and Ashley Unruh.

The team also features a large group of veterans including Mary Alexander, Angelina Connuli, Amanda Endicott, Sean Gomes, Derek Haines, Kelly Holdren, Gabby Mattera, Nicole Rehbach, and Devin Velli. This year’s transfers and freshman include David Bellew, Pete Burnham, Corinne Carney, Ariel Ellixson, Alexis Hazel, Rebecca Hitchens, Asia Mincey, Katrina Rockwell, Natalie Spiker and Malayia Voss.
