Wilmington Women’s Basketball Posts Best Defensive Effort of Season but Edged by Chestnut Hill, 49-38

Tiaja Harrold recorded her first career double-double as the Wilmington University women’s basketball team allowed the fewest point total of the 2012-13 season, but a late Chestnut Hill run allowed the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference foe to pull away for a 49-38 victory on Tuesday night in Sorgenti Arena.
Harrold hit a late three-pointer to pull the Wildcats (3-19, 1-14 CACC) to within eight points with 1:01 remaining, but it was too little too late for the visitors. The three-pointer was the 10th point for Harrold who finished with her first career double-double, pulling 10 rebounds in addition to the 10 points for the team’s fourth such accolade of the season.
With the win, the Griffins (4-15, 2-10 CACC) avenged a loss in the teams’ first meeting of the year, a 61-60 Wilmington victory on December 4 at the WU Athletics Complex, to split the season series. Since the game was tied at 24-24 with 12:57 remaining in the contest, the Griffins went on a 25-14 run the rest of way, taking the lead for good on a Lila Jones traditional three-point play with 12:25 showing on the scoreboard.
In the defensive battle, the Wildcats shot 24 percent from the field (15-for-63) while only converting three three-point field goals in 20 attempts. The Wildcats came away with nine steals while forcing 23 Chestnut Hill turnovers and recording two blocks. Wilmington only found its way to the free throw line on 10 occasions, sinking five shots.
The Griffins didn’t fare much better from the field in the tightly tested contest, shooting 33 percent from the field (19-for-58), while only hitting 2-of-16 attempts from beyond the three-point arc. The home team made it to the free throw line more that the Wildcats (19 attempts) but was only able to hit nine shots for a 47 percent result. The Griffins recorded four block shots while outrebounding the Wildcats, 47-44 for the game.
Harrold tied with freshman classmate Tenicia Spence for the team high with 10 points, while Danielle Thomas had one of the team’s three pointers and finished with five points. Tashea Plummer grabbed eight boards while Lauren Brown added six rebounds and dished out a team high three assists.
Chestnut Hill was led by Jones’ game high 13 points while Aimee Bouie collected a game high 11 rebounds. Bouie was a bucket away from her own double-double, scoring eight points. Lindsay Alexander also grabbed double figure rebounds, finishing with 10 boards.
The Wildcats remain on the road for two more games, one more during this week with a trip to CACC North Division foe Bloomfield on Saturday. The women are scheduled for a 1 p.m. tip inside Bloomfield Gym.
