Wilmington Women’s Lacrosse Falls 14-7 to Georgian Court in CACC Matchup

The Wilmington University women’s lacrosse team matched Georgian Court in every almost every facet of the game on Saturday, with the exception coming in the final score as the Wildcats fell, 14-7, in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference matchup at the WU Athletics Complex.

Wilmington (0-8, 0-2 CACC) hung right with or held an advantage over the Lions (2-3-1, 2-0 CACC) in shots, ground balls, draw controls, and turnovers, but Georgian Court was able to find the back of the next on 14 of its 29 shots to leave Newark with another victory over the Wildcats.

With the win, the Lions are now 12-1 overall over the Wildcats, having won 12 straight since their first meeting back in 2007.

The Wildcats held the advantage in draw controls, 13-10, and turnovers, 9-10, but missed a golden opportunity by receiving 11 free position shots while only being able to convert on four 8-meter shots.

Sophomore Rebekah McCurry led the Wildcat attack on Saturday, recording the hat trick with three goals on seven shots. She also collected a pair of ground balls and draw controls each. McCurry went 2-for-4 from the 8-meter mark, converting half of the team’s makes. Sophomore Megan Keffer tallied two goals while also getting in on three draw controls on the afternoon. Keffer went 1-for-4 from the free position line. Senior Jaclyn Hall scored a goal and recorded a team high four draws while graduate student Molly Taylor added the final Wilmington goal, going 1-for-1 from the 8-meter mark.

The Wildcats found themselves down from the start and every time they were looking for back-to-back goals to get back into the contest, the Lions disrupted their run with a goal of their own. The Wildcats came out and scored the first goal of the second half and had five shots, including one free-position opportunity, over the next seven minutes but with no such luck on recording back-to-back goals.

A Georgian Court goal following the five opportunities from the Wildcats at the 21:24 mark of the second half seemed to deflate the home team, as the Lions went on to score five straight to take control of the game at 13-5.

The Lions’ Corrine Coyle and Stephanie Gallo finished with a team high four goals each, while both collecting an assist on the afternoon. Kerry Stader also recorded a hat trick with three goals while Melissa Williams scored a pair of goal. Molly McCourt rounded out the visitor’s scoring with a single goal.

Georgian Court held a 29-26 shot advantage while also picking up more ground balls, 14-13, on the afternoon. Wilmington collected more draw controls, 13-10, for the game, while both teams went 0-for-1 on their extra man opportunities.

Senior goalkeeper Kaitlyn Hall made eight stops in goal for the Wildcats while Wilmington, Del., native Amanda Cathcart recorded six saves in the win for Georgian Court.

The Wildcats take back to the road for their next CACC contest, heading to Chestnut Hill on Tuesday for a South Division matchup. The opening draw is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
