Defensive Unit's Strong Showing Not Enough as Wilmington Women’s Soccer Falls 2-0 to Southern New Hampshire in Opener

WS: Southern New Hampshire 2 - Wilmington 0

Junior transfer Julia Brown recorded six saves as the defensive unit of the Wilmington University women’s soccer team dug in its heels, but the Wildcats dropped its season opener, 2-0, against Southern New Hampshire, hosted by Franklin Pierce at Sodexo Field on Friday afternoon.

Wilmington (0-1 overall) did not tally its first official shot of the match until the second half, while the defense hold on tight despite Southern New Hampshire’s 21 total shots throughout the contest.

The Penmen got on the board in the ninth minute, finishing a pass on the right post off a pass from the endline on the right wing. The team’s second goal came in the 70th minute of the contest, as Ashley Jaskula finished in the lower right corner of the goal on a partial breakaway down the left side. The game-winning goal was credited to Morgan Branco.

Freshman Rebecca Sowers recorded the lone shot for the Wildcats in the match, from a header off a corner at the 69:36 mark of the second half. Southern New Hampshire’s Samantha Whittier recorded the save.

The backline of Sarah Lindler, Kaitlyn Atmore, and Rebecca Prentice helped Brown and Wildcats remain in the contest, despite being out shot 12-0 in the first half, and 21-1 overall.

The Wildcats remain in Rindge, N.H. for one more contest over the weekend as they take on host Franklin Pierce on Sunday. The opening draw is set for 3 p.m.
