Wilmington University Partners with CBS3 Philadelphia for Annual “Joy of Sharing” Toy Drive

Students, faculty and staff team up to collect toys for disadvantaged children.

Wilmington University is joining forces with CBS3 Philadelphia for its annual “Joy of Sharing” toy drive to benefit the Salvation Army in its effort to provide holiday gifts for underprivileged children.

The campaign begins today, Friday, November 1, at all University locations. The last day for the toy drive will be December 17.

Everyone who wishes to contribute may drop off a new, unwrapped toy in any of the collection bins that will be set up across the New Castle campus and the following additional University locations: the Wilson Graduate Center, Dover, Dover Air Force Base, Brandywine, Middletown, Georgetown, Burlington County College, Cumberland County College and Joint Base-McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst.

Dr. Regina Allen-Sharpe, Senior Director of Career Services and Student Life, is mentoring the student organizations that have been involved in the planning for the toy drive and whose members will be actively involved with the toy collection throughout the campaign.

"Our club advisers, club leaders and athletes are coming together to promote the campaign to classmates throughout the University and the community," she commented. "As extra incentive, the club and athletic team who donates the most toys (as determined by coaches and the Student Life staff) will enjoy a pizza party given just for them by the University. Additionally, every student who donates a toy at the Pratt Student Center on the New Castle campus will be entered in a drawing to win a $50 gift card."

In addition to campus donations, the Wilmington University Human Resources Department has announced that it will donate up to $500 worth of toys to the Joy of Sharing Drive if 27 Wellness Center members use the Employee Wellness Center daily during the month of November.

“The ‘Fit for Toys’ program is meant to be an incentive for employees to visit and exercise in the Wellness Center,” said Karen Sheats, Assistant Director of Human Resources. “If 27 employees visit the center each work day during November, the Human Resources Department will have met its goal to make this additional donation.”

“We felt it was important to get involved in the 'Joy of Sharing' toy drive because there is no worse feeling than waking up on Christmas morning without any toys to unwrap. No child should ever have to go through that,” said Dr. Peter Bailey, the University’s Vice President for External Affairs. “Our University is all about giving people the opportunity for a bright future, and that’s exactly what our 'Joy of Sharing' campaign is doing for as many children and families as possible this holiday season."
