Wilmington University Unveils New Mascot - 'Wiley D. Wildcat'

Wilmington University unveiled its new mascot on Sunday afternoon, after a month long search for his new name. “Wiley D. Wildcat” made his debut prior to the start of the women’s basketball game against Kutztown University, and excited the crowd in his new, custom-designed outfit.

The search for his new name was conducted on the Wilmington website. Students and staff were emailed for their suggestions and a final few were narrowed down. A poll was placed on the athletics website and again emailed out to staff and students. After over 600 votes were tabulated, “Wiley” was chosen as his new moniker.

“Wiley” beat out other nicknames including “Will”, “Woosh”, “Roary”, “Pouncer”, and “Willy”. “We are thrilled to finally have a new name and costume for our mascot. The re-design done by Erin Hart and University Relations is outstanding, and gives ‘Wiley’ a distinctive look”, stated Tina Scott, Director of Student Affairs. “The name ‘Wiley’, also has special connotations. It can be used to describe a feline’s actions as being sly and tricky, perfect for a wildcat.”

Wiley D. Wildcat will be assisting the Wilmington University Cheerleading Team throughout the season at various performances, and will also be participating in local community sponsored events to help promote the University.
