Pause for a Cause

The Importance of Student Philanthropy

“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” – a phrase that many of us have heard all of our lives. When the word philanthropy becomes the topic of discussion it’s almost inevitable that the act of donating money will follow in conversation. However, people tend to overlook that philanthropy is not just about money, but it can also create the opportunity to donate your time and talents as well. Fortunately, many of our students are learning what philanthropy is all about and we are here to make sure that everyone gains a better understanding of how their small acts of kindness can make a large impact in the life of another.

Starting December 1st, Wilmington University and the Alumni Relations department will begin a campaign to promote philanthropy around campus titled: Pause for a Cause. Pause for a Cause will strive to create and encourage a culture of philanthropy within the student body. The importance of students giving back to students is necessary. By starting in their college years, students will understand ways to use their time, talents, and treasure to make a difference and will be more likely to pay it forward once they graduate. Pause for a Cause will host a variety of different events around campus to teach students and provide them with examples of how they can practice philanthropy within their own lives.

Many of the current student organizations at Wilmington University already have incorporated philanthropy into their mission. For example, the Student Alumni Association raises and donates money towards the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk that they participate in each year in honor of a former member who was a victim of breast cancer. The Education Club uses their enthusiasm and talents as future teachers to volunteer as teacher assistants at local daycares that are in need of help. Also, the Student United Way club used their time to plan, organize, and act out skits on bullying and behavior for over 900 children, in addition to providing their library with books and pencils. Therefore, if 3 organizations could make that big of an impact, imagine what type of change the whole student body of Wilmington University could bring.

Thank you to all of the alumni who have already made an effort to practice philanthropy towards the students at Wilmington University. With your positive example, our students are learning the importance of paying the generosity forward and can practice it in their own lives and with each other.

Please stop by the Auditorium in the Doberstein Admissions Center on Tuesday, December 1st from 12-2pm and 4-6pm, and at the Wilson Graduate Center from 4-6pm to experience the Pause for a Cause campaign in action.

Thank you.
