For Nursing Students, 3 + 1 = More

Wilmington University's cooperative agreement with Wor-Wic Community College puts RNs on track for bachelor's degrees

Three plus one equals a great opportunity for nursing students at Wor-Wic Community College in Salisbury, Md. Under the school's new 3+1 articulation agreement with Wilmington University, nursing associate degree graduates are more than halfway toward earning a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN).

The cooperative partnership enables registered nurses (RNs) who have earned 86 credit hours at Wor-Wic over three years of study — just 16 more credits than what is required to attain an associate of science in nursing degree — to seamlessly transfer to WilmU's College of Health Professions. The extra 16 credits include coursework in nutrition, American government and humanities electives.

Once Wor-Wic graduates have transferred to WilmU, their completion of the 31-credit upper division nursing core and a 3-credit research writing course — a fourth year of study — will augment their RN credentials with a BSN degree.

"By earning a bachelor of science in nursing, students and prospective job candidates will have gained valuable leadership skills necessary to advance in the dynamic healthcare industry," said Dr. Denise Westbrook, Dean of the College of Health Professions at Wilmington University.

The arrangement also carries economic incentives, said Dr. Peter Bailey, Wilmington University Vice President of External and International Affairs. "The 3+1 agreement not only helps nursing students earn their bachelor's degrees; it stands to save them thousands of dollars in tuition costs," he said.

For more information on the 3+1 agreement, contact Dr. Brenda Mister, head of Wor-Wic's nursing department, at 410-572-8702 or bmister@worwic.edu, or Dr. Westbrook at 302-356-6915 or denise.z.westbrook@wilmu.edu.
