Accounting Review Certificate Shows the Way to CPA

Wilmington University offers the only guided CPA review course in Delaware

Accounting students who are setting their sights on the certified public accountant credential can find a guide and a headstart in a new certificate program available through Wilmington University's College of Business.

The accounting review certificate's five courses — Financial Accounting and Reporting I and II, Auditing and Attestation, Regulation, and Business Environment and Concepts — have been designed to prepare students for the four sections of the CPA exam, and will contribute 15 credit hours toward the 150 required for CPA licensure.

They will also provide a unique educational opportunity. "Rather than studying on their own, students will benefit from an instructor-coach," said Sally Stokes, chair of the accounting program and an associate professor in the College of Business. "No other schools in the Delaware area offer a facilitated CPA review course with an instructor."

Using the Surgent CPA Review's online readings, videos, and multiple-choice quizzes as their textbook, students will meet weekly with instructors — each one a CPA and an expert in each course's material — to ask questions and demonstrate their progress through the assignments.

The certificate program is open to graduate and mid-career students who have earned a bachelor's degree in accounting and a minimum of 24 credit hours in the subject, the prerequisites for taking the CPA exam in Delaware.

The accounting review certificate's five-week courses will begin later this month during the Fall Fusion I term (August 28 to September 30), continue through Fall Fusion II and Spring Fusion I, break for tax season, and conclude in Summer Fusion I and II to coincide with the CPA exam's summer testing window.

The courses will be taught in a video-enhanced classroom at Wilmington University's New Castle campus, allowing distance-learning students to participate online.

"This certificate has the potential to be academically valuable for any student who wants to sit for the Uniform Certified Public Accounting Exam," said Stokes.
