WilmU Dover Donates Back-to-School Backpacks

Annual school supplies drive helps local students to start the year right

When school starts in Dover-area districts later this month, 59 students will be better prepared for the classroom thanks to Wilmington University's backpack campaign.

For the annual campaign, coordinated by the university's human resources department between July 19 and August 2, faculty, staff, and students donated backpacks and school supplies for local students in need.

On August 14, representatives of WilmU's Dover campus delivered 59 backpacks — each one outfitted with pencils, pens, crayons, notebooks, glue sticks, and other school supplies — to the Greater Dover Boys and Girls Club for distribution.

These donations can make a big difference in a student's potential, said Darrell Tingle, the organization's director of business development. "The impact of knowing you're going to school with the necessary supplies is immeasurable," he said.

"The heightened self-esteem provides a child with a great mental and emotional start to the year," he added. "Now 59 of our children will begin school with smiles on their faces, knowing they have what they need for a successful year. We thank everyone who worked on this drive."
