How to Help Hurricane Harvey Victims

Wilmington University Student Government Association heads up disaster relief donation drive

Hurricane Harvey, now considered one of the most destructive storms in U.S. history, dumped more than 50 inches of rain in parts of southeast Texas and Louisiana in less than a week. The resulting catastrophic flooding caused the displacement of tens of thousands of residents and the damage estimates are in the billions of dollars. Many, if not most, of the people displaced and impacted by the devastation of the storm have no flood insurance.

Wilmington University's Student Government Association (SGA) aims to aid the storm's victims, support ongoing rescue operations, and fund disaster recovery efforts by collecting monetary donations for the American Red Cross.

"The Student Government Association and Student Life have a history of partnering in fundraising efforts to serve the afflicted in times of need," said Alice Miller, student activities coordinator and SGA advisor. "After seeing the impact of Hurricane Harvey, we knew we wanted to donate and we knew we needed to give the University community an opportunity to assist with the massive relief efforts."

Faculty, staff, and students are invited to join the SGA's donation drive. Those who wish to make a monetary donation to relief efforts should make checks payable to the American Red Cross and include "Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund" on the memo line. All checks should be forwarded to Alice Miller at the Pratt Student Center on the New Castle campus. Every donation received will be forwarded to the Delmarva chapter of the Red Cross Greater Chesapeake Region.

Wilmington University will be collecting donations until Friday, September 29.

Donors who would prefer to give directly to the Red Cross can do so through the following channels:

•  Online: Visit the American Red Cross website.

•  Text message: Texting HARVEY to 90999 will automatically donate $10.

•  Phone: Make a credit card donation by calling 1-800-HELP-NOW (1-800-435-7669).

•  Mail: Print out this donation form and send it to:

Wilmington University Department of Student Life also sponsors an annual Alternative Spring Break, a group trip that allows interested students the opportunity to lend a hand in a service project. Past trips have included rebuilding after Hurricane Sandy in New Jersey and Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana.

"To see the Gulf Coast region hit again is devastating, and we hope our fundraising efforts can help those in need," said Miller.
