Wilmington University will help job seekers.

Searching for a new job can be a slow and difficult task and for 38,200 Delawareans it is an everyday reality. According to the Department of Labor, Delaware’s unemployment rate has jumped from 8.6% in November 2009 to 9% in December. Across the bridge in New Jersey the unemployment rate has risen to 10%. For many who are recently unemployed, finding a new job is critical and most don’t know where to begin to look. That is why Wilmington University would like to lend a helping hand. As part of a community outreach program the University’s Career Services department is offering several free workshops throughout the tri-state area to prepare job seekers on their paths to success.

The first workshop is entitled ‘Job Seeking Strategies’ and will be offered at the University’s Burlington County College location in New Jersey on February 23 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. This workshop will provide insight into the new job search process. Participants will learn how to network and better market their skills and talents.

“In the current economy it is important for job seekers to explore all the avenues they can,” said Dr. Regina Allen-Sharpe, Director of Career Services at Wilmington University. “You can take the skill sets you already have and transition them into different fields. Many people don’t think to look outside their current field, but there are plenty of opportunities out there.”

The second workshop entitled ‘Mock Interviews Workshop with Barclay Bank’ will be held on February 24 from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. at the University’s New Castle campus. During this workshop Human Resources professionals from Barclay Bank will be on campus in the Audrey Kohl Doberstein Admissions Center to provide interview techniques and tips.

Meanwhile at the University’s Dover site the Career Services department is offering a workshop on the ‘Federal Application Process’ on February 25 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. This workshop will help participants apply for federal and government jobs and better prepare a competitive application to ensure they stand out in the applicant pool.

On March 18 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. the Career Services department will hold its annual Spring Career Fair. The Career Fair, which will be held in the Audrey Kohl Doberstein Admissions Center on the New Castle campus, will feature representatives from businesses throughout the region including AAA Mid-Atlantic, Red Clay Consolidated School District, Connectiv Energy, TD Bank, Sallie Mae, Barclaycard US, Gunnip and CO. and more. This event is free and open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to bring copies of their resumes and to dress professional.
