DR. DEBRA L. BERKE
Debra is a graduate of the University of Nebraska- Lincoln with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology and a Master of Science degree in Human Development and Family Studies. She also holds a Ph.D. in Family Studies from the University of Delaware. Prior to joining the Wilmington University faculty on a full-time basis, she taught family studies and women’s studies at Messiah College for 15 years. She also directed the Gender
Studies Project at Messiah College. Dr. Berke has been a consultant for the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency and the State of Delaware. She has served as chair of the Family Policy Section, chair of the Education and Enrichment Section, and on the Board of Directors of the National Council on Family Relations. She was also president of the Family Science Association. Debra is a Certified Family Life Educator and the director of Psychology programs at Wilmington University. She offers an informed piece on WilmU’s new and popular undergraduate certificate in Trauma-Informed Approaches.
DR. JANICE COLVIN
Janice is an award-winning writer, editor and communications instructor with more than 30 years of experience in the communications field. She is an assistant professor and the chair of the Communication and Liberal Studies degree programs at Wilmington University. Her past experience includes working as the editor and humor columnist for a weekly newspaper, the Queen Anne’s Record Observer in Centreville, Md., as
well as The Star Democrat, a daily newspaper based in Easton, Md. She’s written for several national aviation magazines and newsletters (she’s also a pilot), was the editor of two pilot association publications, worked as the managing editor of a quarterly magazine for seaplane pilots, and served as technical editor and writer for an international computer software company. Janice has received numerous awards for editorial work, including the Maryland State Teachers Association School Bell Award, two Mark Twain awards from the Associated Press, and many more from the Maryland, Delaware and District of Columbia (MDDC) Press Association. She’s a past fellow of the Knight Center for Specialized Journalism at University of Maryland, College Park, and a graduate of specialized courses on newspaper editing and writing at the American Press Institute in Reston, Va. To de-stress, Janice makes jewelry and teaches mixed media design in precious metal clay. She keeps her energy levels on super-max (she’s also the grandmother of 4-year-old twin boys) by taking vitamins and reading poetry by Mary Oliver. Janice offers “An Artistic Vision,” a feature story about a WilmU adjunct who is helping to heal communities through the visual art.
